JEKYLL ISLAND, GA (Feb. 19, 2007) – No one is asking11-year-old Cindy Feng Yueer of Shen Zhen, China, when she plans on turning professional. Not yet, at least. But after her play in the U.S. Kids Golf Jekyll Island Cup, which ended here on Monday, she might get ready for the inevitable question.
Yueer, who is on an extended visit to the U.S. while she takes lessons at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy in Florida, shot 65-68 – 133 and won her age group by 16 shots. The win earned her an invitation to the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship this summer in Pinehurst, N.C.
The fourth annual U.S. Kids Golf Jekyll Island Cup attracted 411 players (boys and girls 4 to 12 years of age) from 37 states and four foreign countries. In addition to Yueer, others who won their age-group competition and received an invitation to the eighth annual World Championship, included: (girls 8 and under) Claire Hodges, Wildwood, Mo., 38-33 – 71; (girls 9) Alex Wright, Midlothian, Va., 39-36 – 75; (girls 10) Maddie Szeryk, Allen, Texas, 35-35 – 70; (girls 12) Mariah Stackhouse, Riverdale, Ga., 73-77 – 150.
Winners in the boys division included (6 and under) August Joshua Beechler, Glassboro, N.J., 34-30 – 64; (boys 7) Cole Pridgen, Warsaw, N.C., 36-32 – 68; (boys 8) Russell Matos, Lombard, Ill., 37-37 – 74; (boys 9) Terrence Zhang, Orlando, Fla., 69-68 – 137; (boys 10) Tanner Owen, High Point, N.C., 71-69 – 140; (boys 11) Robby Shelton, Wilmer, Ala., 74-70 – 144; (boys 12) Jordan Miller, Bradenton, Fla., 74-72 – 146.
