First PGA Tour Victory for TaylorMade’s New r7 SuperQuad Driver and TaylorMade’s TP Red Golf Ball
CARLSBAD, Calif. (February 26, 2007) – TaylorMade-adidas Tour Staff professional Fred Funk yesterday became only the second player in history to win a regular PGA Tour event after winning a Champions Tour event. Last month Funk, 50, won the Champions Tour’s Turtle Bay Championship. Yesterday he captured the PGA Tour’s Mayakoba Golf Classic by defeating fellow TaylorMade-adidas Tour Staffer Jose Coceres in a two-hole playoff. Key to Funk’s wire-to-wire Mayakoba win was his sizzling 8-under-par 62 in the opening round, which set a new course record.
Funk’s victory at Mayakoba was also significant because it was the first time a player has won on the PGA Tour while using TaylorMade’s new r7 SuperQuad driver, and while using a TaylorMade TP Red golf ball. It was the second consecutive week that the TaylorMade r7 SuperQuad was used to win: Paula Creamer used the r7 SuperQuad when she captured the LPGA Tour’s SBS Open at Turtle Bay last week.
Also in Funk’s bag: TaylorMade 3-wood, TaylorMade Rescue® club (16°), TaylorMade racâ?¢ CGB 3-iron, TaylorMade r7 TP irons (4-9), rac TP 56° and 60° wedges. He played the TaylorMade TP Red ball and wore adidas Golf’s new POWERBAND footwear.*
Funk switched golf ball brands to the TaylorMade TP Red at the start of this year and has already won twice with it. The TP Red is engineered to deliver exceptionally fast ball speed for greater distance as well as a low launch angle. TaylorMade also offers the TP Blackâ?¢, a tour-caliber ball that promotes a higher launch angle and firmer feel compared to the TP Red. Both balls feature an advanced dimple design and aerodynamics that makes them super stable in the wind, a benefit that tour pros have praised again and again.
Funk switched to the r7 SuperQuad last week at the Nissan Open. TaylorMade introduced two new drivers to the tour, the SuperQuad and the Burner, five weeks ago; since then they have been put into play a combined total of 95 times on the PGA Tour.*
TaylorMade was the No. 1 driver at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, as well as the No. 1 fairway wood, No. 1 iron, No. 1 hybrid and No. 3 golf ball. adidas Golf was the No. 2 brand of footwear.
