Mark Wilson Captures Honda Classic in Four-Player All-Pro V1 Playoff; 20-Year Old Anton Haig Wins Johnnie Walker Classic Against World-Class Field
Fairhaven, MA (March 5, 2007) – While the winner of the Honda Classic was still in question as Mark Wilson, Jose Coceres, Camilo Villegas and Boo Weekley prepared for a playoff, the winning golf ball was not. For the fifth time on the 2007 PGA Tour, it would be a Titleist. Trusting the New Pro V1x, Wilson emerged victorious for his first career PGA Tour title, as the foursome topped a leaderboard that featured 11 Titleist players among the top 12 finishers.
It was more of the same on the PGA European Tour, where 20-year old Anton Haig earned his maiden victory in a three-man playoff at the Johnnie Walker Classic that included fellow Pro V1x player Richard Sterne.
Two more wins advance the Titleist victory count across the 2007 worldwide professional tours to 26, compared to six for the nearest competitor.
PGA TOUR: The Honda Classic was suspended to due to darkness after one sudden death hole. All four playoff participants finished regulation at 5-under 275, with Villegas and Coceres closing with 4-under 66s, while Weekley and Wilson shot 71s.
All four players continued to the second playoff hole on Monday morning where Villegas and Weekley were eliminated.
Titleist was the golf ball of choice at the Honda Classic with 112 (78%) players, more than 11 times the nearest competitor with 10.
Eleven of the 12 players who finished among the top 10 and ties relied on Titleist golf balls.
Titleist was also the choice of more players than any other brand in the iron (36), wedge (143) and putter (58) categories, and was second in drivers (40) and fairway metals (55).
The win was the 5th by a Titleist golf ball player on the 2007 PGA Tour, more than twice the nearest competitor.
PGA EUROPEAN TOUR: Haig, a South African native, birdied the final hole of regulation and then repeated the feat in a sudden-death playoff, to capture the Johnnie Walker Classic in Phuket, Thailand.
The event was tri-sanctioned by the Asian, Australasian and PGA European Tours.
It marked the first PGA European Tour title for Haig, who was among trio of players who finished at 13-under 275. Titleist was the overwhelming golf ball of choice at the Johnnie Walker Classic with 113 (72%) players, more than eight times the nearest competitor with 14.
The win was the 8th by a Titleist golf ball player on the 2007 PGA European Tour, more than all other golf balls combined.
