Pellucid Corp. reports that, after taking a pounding the first two months of the year which fueled a double-digit decline in rounds, March Golf Playable Hours (GPH) posted a solid gain of 16% for the month vs. March 2006. On the strength of March’s weather favorability, the year-to-date (YTD) deficit on GPH was erased with the first quarter ending up 1% vs. Q1 2006.
Regional breadth results across Pellucid’s 24 weather-based regions however were still slightly in negative territory with 7 regions in the red, 6 in the black, 2 neutral and 9 not yet open based on weather rules. However, that’s considerably better than February’s YTD breadth results which were a 1:9 ratio of favorable vs. unfavorable regions. March’s strength provides hope that the industry won’t start the 2007 key playing season in negative territory on rounds compared to last year.
Pellucid President Jim Koppenhaver comments on the current results saying, "We’re holding our breath hoping that the March rounds played results reflect some, if not all, of the weather upside we’re reporting for March. Through the first two months of the year, while weather has not been favorable, rounds demand has lagged even the unfavorable weather. If rounds in March are up more than 8% vs. year-ago, then the industry will turn in its first weather-beating performance in over a year. If the results are in positive territory but less than 8%, it will suggest we tracked with the weather but didn’t take full advantage of what Mother Nature gave us."
