Zach Johnson Wins 71st Masters Tournament Trusting Titleist
Fairhaven, MA (April 9, 2007) – With unwavering faith in himself and his equipment, Titleist brand ambassador Zach Johnson secured his place in golf history by winning the 2007 Masters Tournament. Facing down challenging conditions at Augusta National and the world’s best players on golf’s grandest stage, Johnson displayed patience and perseverance to earn his first major championship and second career PGA TOUR title. Johnson’s previous win was at the 2004 BellSouth Classic in just his 13th PGA TOUR start.
Johnson, who relies upon the New Titleist Pro V1x golf ball, Pro Titanium 905R (8.5) driver, 503.H (19.0) utility iron, 735.CM (3-4) and 695CB (5-9) irons, Vokey Design pitching (48) and sand (54) wedges and a Vokey Design Spin Milled lob wedge (60) for his success, posted three birdies in a four-hole stretch on the back nine on Sunday en route to a two-shot victory. Johnson closed with a 3-under 69 to finish at 1-over 289, tying for the day’s best round and for the highest winning overall score in Masters history.
Statistically Speaking: As a testament to Johnson’s consistent play throughout the event, he finished T2 in Driving Accuracy (80.4) and T4 in Greens in Regulation (61.1%). Johnson also finished 11-under par on the par 5’s without reaching any of them in two shots, not only putting on a display with his accuracy off the tee, but also his short game into and around the hard and fast greens with his Vokey Design wedges.
New Golf Balls, Continued Success: Johnson’s victory is the 9th for Titleist golf ball players on the 2007 PGA TOUR, more than four times the nearest competitor with 2. All nine golf ball victories have been with the New Pro V1 or Pro V1x. The win also advanced the Titleist golf ball victory count across the worldwide professional tours to 39, more than six times the nearest competitor with 6, and more than all other golf balls combined.
The #1 Ball at the Masters, the #1 Ball in Golf: Champion Zach Johnson was one of 56 players (58%) who relied upon the Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x at the limited-field Masters, more than four times the nearest competitor with 13. Through the Masters, a Titleist golf ball has been teed up by 1,319 players on the 2007 PGA TOUR, compared to 158 by the nearest competitor. Across all worldwide professional tours the Titleist number grows to 5,044, players, compared to 580 for the nearest competitor.
Survey Says …: In addition to golf balls, Titleist was also the choice of more players in the iron category at The Masters with 16. The 755 was the most popular iron among Titleist players with six sets in play. Titleist also continues to be the overwhelming favorite in the sand, lob and approach wedge category with 64 (32%) in play at The Masters, nearly double the nearest competitor (34).
