National Panel Of Raters Rank Golfweek’s Best Golf Courses

April 11, 2007

ORLANDO, Fla., (April 10, 2007) – In its March 10 issue, Golfweek magazine published the 2007 Golfweek’s Best Classic and Modern lists, marking the eleventh year Golfweek has ranked the best Modern and Classic courses. Once again, Golfweek has devoted an entire issue to the Golfweek’s Best Course rankings, including state-by-state rankings.

"The interesting thing about this year’s list is for the first time we have a nine hole course on the Modern list, The Dunes Club at No. 30," said Bradley S. Klein, National Director of Golfweek’s Best course rating program. "On the Classic side we are starting to see the impact of restorations, including two first timers on the list, No. 82 Eastwood Ho! Country Club and No. 83 Engineers Golf Club. While the new market in golf course development has slowed there is still plenty of activity within the restoration industry. "

The Golfweek’s Best Courses program annually identifies the best courses from two distinctly different eras — pre- and post- 1960. The exclusive system acknowledges that before 1960, the year that separates Classic from Modern, most course designers relied on native contours for course features. After 1960, as the game became more popular, designers began to utilize high-tech engineering and advanced mechanical means to transform the landscape to suit their design.

The two top spots on the Classic list are repeats again this year with the Alister MacKenzie designed Cypress Point Club in Pebble Beach, Calif., taking the No. 1 spot and the George Crump and Harry S. Colt designed Pine Valley Golf Club in Pine Valley, N.J., coming in second. Dropping from No. 3 to No. 10 this year is Augusta National and rounding out the Classic list is Canterbury Golf Club in Beachwood, Ohio at No. 100.

Again at No. 1 on the top-100 Modern list is Sand Hills Golf Club in Mullen, Neb., designed by the team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, followed by the Tom Doak designed Pacific Dunes in Bandon, Ore. The modern list features only seven newcomers this year, the smallest rookie class in the rankings 11-year history.

Golfweek’s course raters, a nationwide team of more than 400 evaluators, have scoured the landscape, surveyed over 500 Classic and 1,200 Modern nominated courses, and rendered their judgment on the basis of 10 standards of evaluation. Collectively, they have turned in more than 37,000 votes.

The criteria for evaluating the golf courses, and Golfweek’s Best Classic, Modern, and a comprehensive state-by-state list, may be found at www.americasbestcourses.com.

Founded in 1975, Golfweek is the journal of record for competitive golf. It delivers the most complete news and information about the game, the people and the industry, to golf’s most important audience. Golfweek is a part of Turnstile Publishing Company, which also includes Golfweek’s SuperNEWS, TurfNet Monthly, GLO, FISH & FLY, Art Calendar, TurfNet.com, GLOLiving.com and Golfweek.com, featuring golf’s first online television network.
