24th Annual World Am to be Held August 27 – August 31, 2007, in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
April 16, 2007, Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Preparations for the 2007 PGA TOUR Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship are underway with discounted entry fees now available for the world’s largest single-site amateur golf tournament, to be held August 27-31 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. New participants have until July 10th to sign up at the discounted entry fee of $490 and after July 10th, the entry fee will increase to $525 for all golfers.
"The PGA TOUR Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship is considered the ‘Every Day Golfers’ U.S. Open,’" said Steve Mays, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday’s tournament director. "Any amateur golfer with a United States Golf Association handicap index, or foreign equivalent, can register for the World Am and has a legitimate chance to be crowned as the ‘World Golf Champion.’ In addition, we’ve added a few special events in 2007 and look forward to the most exciting tournament in the 23-year history of the World Am."
The PGA TOUR Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship is a 72-hole tournament played on 66 Myrtle Beach area golf courses each August. Participants compete for the right to be crowned "World Amateur Golf Champion" and to win some of the more than $500,000 in prizes given away at the tournament. Players are flighted according to their handicap and at the conclusion of the 72-holes, flight winners advance to the 18-hole world championship playoff at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
Each evening after tournament play, participants and their guests attend the "World’s Largest 19th Hole" at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center which includes an extensive golf exposition, equipment demos, entertainment, open bars, prize drawings and dinner buffet featuring 15 of Myrtle Beach’s best restaurants.
Returning to the 19th Hole again in 2007 is the 40,000 square foot PGA TOUR Superstore interactive experience featuring merchandise from leading golf equipment and apparel manufacturers, game improvement areas and clinics from leading instructors. PGA TOUR Superstore will also hold skill contests and games for participants and guests to enjoy.
Entry into the World Am includes four rounds of golf and a gift bag with more than $150 in merchandise. The entry fee also provides the golfer and guest with a pass to the World’s Largest 19th Hole, the tournament’s nightly party in the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.
The World Amateur’s newest competitive entry is as much about the bond between family and golf as it is competition. 2007 will mark the inaugural year of the Cory Lemke Parent-Child Championship, a free of charge tournament for any combination of parent and child participating in the World Amateur. Registration for the Parent-Child Championship is limited to the first 150 teams. The top 10 teams with the lowest net scores will receive PGA TOUR Superstore gift certificates.
The event will be played in honor of Cory Lemke, who won his flight at the age of 15 in 2002 and played countless rounds of golf with his father, Mark Lemke, a 12-year tournament participant. Cory tragically lost his life in a 2006 motorcycle accident but his memory will live on through the Cory Lemke Parent-Child Championship.
For the second year in a row, the World Amateur will serve as the United States qualifier for the International Pairs Championship, with the winners receiving an all expenses paid trip to St. Andrews, Scotland, to represent the U.S. in the tournament finale.
Golfers can register now online at the World Am website, WorldAmGolf.com, or call 1-800-833-8798.
