Championship to Honor Memory of Former World Am Junior Golfer
April 16, 2007, Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The PGA TOUR Superstore World Amateur’s newest competitive entry is as much about the bond between family and golf as it is competition. Held August 27 – 31, 2007 in Myrtle Beach, S.C., the 2007 World Am will mark the inaugural year of the Cory Lemke Parent-Child Championship.
Open and free of charge to any combination of parent and child entered in the PGA TOUR Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship, the event will be held in honor of 19-year-old Cory Lemke, who tragically lost his life in a 2006 motorcycle accident. His memory will live on through the Cory Lemke Parent-Child Championship as Cory won his flight at the age of 15 in 2002 and played countless rounds of golf with his father, Mark Lemke, a 12-year tournament participant.
The combined four-round score of all participating parent-child teams will be used with the top 10 teams with the lowest net scores to receive PGA TOUR Superstore gift certificates. Registration for the Parent-Child Championship is limited to the first 150 teams.
"This is a very special event and we are proud to introduce the Cory Lemke Parent-Child Championship at the 2007 World Am," said Steve Mays, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday tournament director. "Unlike nearly every other sport, golf transcends age. The game can be played by the young and old, creating a common ground that draws generations together, and that is the spirit the Cory Lemke Parent-Child Championship will celebrate."
"The World Amateur was our favorite tournament," Mark Lemke said. "The Parent-Child Championship means the world to me. It’s such a great honor for my son. The tournament will keep his name alive. Golf was everything to us. I figured long down the road after he was out of high school and college, it was still something we could do together for the rest or our lives. You see guys out playing golf with their dad. It’s something you can enjoy together."
Registration for the 24th annual World Amateur is now open. Golfers can take advantage of early entry fees by registering now online at the World Am website, WorldAmGolf.com, or by calling 1-800-833-8798.
