ORLANDO, Fla., (April 27, 2007) – Golfweek magazine’s April 28 issue features its 8th annual preview of the amateur golf season.
Highlights of the issue include an indepth examination of handicapping – golf’s unique method of "leveling the playing field" among golfers of various skill levels – including its history, implementation, and the differences between systems used in the United Kingdom and America. The handicapping package also looks at golf organizations’ efforts to combat "sandbagging" – the practice of inflating one’s handicap in order to mask true skill and gain an advantage over competitors in tournaments.
Golfweek’s tradition of showcasing "Local Legends" continues with a profile of Rheba Mabie, an amateur golfer from Wisconsin who continues to compete at a high level despite being afflicted with MS – and who also happens to be a professional clown. The other featured "Local Legends" are Tom Studer from Illinois; Bob Niger and Jim Volpenhein from California; Arizona resident Thuhashini Selvaratnam; Kent Myers from Oregon; and John F. Lutz from Pennsylvania.
"Since we created it in 2000, the Amateur Issue has become one of the most anticipated issues of the year," said Dave Seanor, vice president/editor of Golfweek. "Coverage of amateur golf is our ‘bread and butter.’ The typical Golfweek reader is a low- to mid-handicap, competitive golfer, and the annual Amateur Issue fuels that reader’s aspirations."
Other features include Golfweek’s predictions on who will make the Walker Cup squads for the United States and Great Britain & Ireland (the biennial Walker Cup Match will be played Sept. 8-9 at Royal County Down in Ireland) and senior writer Ron Balicki’s column on "Revival of the Mid-Am."
