Champion Switches to Steel Iron Shafts and Claims Coveted Title
Memphis, TNâ?¦This year’s EDS Byron Nelson Champion benefited from a shaft change in his irons from graphite to True Temper steel in route to claiming the title he has wanted to win most in his career. A product of Texas and a long-time friend of the man for whom the tournament is named, this year’s Champion closed with a final-round 66 to finish with a 72-hole total of 267 and a one-shot victory.
Having played graphite iron shafts for over five years, the Champion made a switch this week to True Temper’s Dynalite Gold® and dialed in his irons. Finishing the week T5 at 73.6% in Greens in Regulation, the Champion fired four rounds in the 60’s to claim his first victory since 2001. In all, True Temper steel shafts have captured 13 of 18 tournaments contested on the 2007 PGA Tour® including 8 of the last 9 consecutive weeks.
On the Nationwide Tour, the Champion trusted the tour-proven performance of Dynamic Gold® to finish on top in a four-man, sudden-death playoff. Leading the field in total birdies (22), the Champion tapped in for birdie on the third playoff hole for his first Nationwide Tour title catapulting him to 8th on the money list. The top 25 at season’s end will earn their 2008 PGA Tour cards. True Temper steel shafts have claimed 7 of 8 Nationwide Tour titles in 2007.
