Doerr Experienced In Variety Of Roles, From Construction Sites To Lesson Tees
CARLSBAD, Calif., April 30, 2007 â?¦ Dave Doerr, who has been involved with virtually every facet of the golf industry, from construction sites to lesson tees, has been named the new Director of Golf at La Costa Resort and Spa, part of the family of KSL Resorts destinations.
At La Costa, the first resort in the United States with a full-service spa when it opened in 1965, Doerr is to be responsible for the golf operations at a 36-hole facility that has won numerous awards — including "Top 100" by GOLF Magazine, "Best Places to Play" by Golf Digest, "Best of Golf" by LINKS Magazine, and "Top Women-Friendly Courses" by Golf for Women. The resort hosted PGA Tour events for nearly 40 years and recently unveiled the La Costa Legends Trail, a series of on-course monuments that celebrate its golf history and reminds guests that they are walking in the footsteps of legends.
"La Costa is a great place to be, a great property and beautiful area," said Doerr, a native of Green Bay, Wis., who grew up in the small logging town of Yreka, along the California-Oregon border. "It is the right fit for me. I worked with KSL for nine years, so this is a great opportunity to rejoin a company I really enjoyed. I know what the expectations are and how we will continue to enhance the total golf experience at La Costa."
Doerr, 41, most recently worked as Director of Club Operations at the Citrus Club, a private facility at La Quinta Resort and Club, which is managed by Hilton. Prior to that, Doerr was General Manager and Head Golf Professional at the Greg Norman Course at PGA West, where he was involved in all facets of operation from the start of construction. Doerr also has worked with other PGA West courses, as well as at Bighorn, in Palm Desert, Calif., and at the Resort at Squaw Creek, in Squaw Valley, Calif.
"Dave brings a solid understanding of our mission for golf at La Costa," said April Shute, General Manager at La Costa. "We are very excited to have him here."
Although he grew up playing golf with his father and used to ride his bike to a nine-hole course near his home, Doerr’s golf career got off to a late start. A three-sport athlete growing up in Yreka, he was a right-handed pitcher in college. One summer he worked for the construction company building Squaw Creek, which then led to him staying to work in a Lake Tahoe ski shop. When he was asked to work in the golf shop at Squaw Creek, Doerr liked the golf business enough to pursue his Class A classification in the PGA of America, which he attained from 1994-1999.
"Sometimes you just never know where you are going to end up," said Doerr, an avid runner and sports fan who lives in Vista with his wife Sheryl and daughter Holly. "In this business, you get to work with a wide variety of people, which I enjoy. I am not the type to always sit behind a desk. Interaction with our guests and the staff is critical to our success."
La Costa’s two courses – the North Course and South Course — each feature a classic design that include striking and traditional touches, challenging golfers’ shot-making ability from tee to green. Four sets of tees provide a course length for all players to enjoy. Both courses are snuggled into the foothills of Carlsbad, 35 miles north of San Diego, meandering through 400 scenic acres accented by luxurious homes. Last year La Costa opened a new $1.5 million practice complex and also is home to the Roger Fredericks Golf Strength and Flexibility Academy.
Legendary among professional and amateur golfers, as well as professional and amateur tennis players, the resort embarked upon a $140 million renovation in late 2001. The transformation features a completely new Spa at La Costa, featuring 42 treatment rooms and a lush 15,000 sq ft garden courtyard complete with pool, Jacuzzi, Roman waterfalls and a Spa Café. All guestrooms and suites have been redesigned, as well, with the elegant Villa Rooms and Villa Suites making their debut in January of 2006. The acclaimed BlueFire Grill opened in February of 2005, as part of the clubhouse renovation and in 2006 La Costa unveiled.
