Pellucid Corp. regrets to report that March’s weather favorability was short-lived as April dealt the industry a crushing blow. For April, at the national level, Pellucid’s proprietary measure of Golf Playable Hours (GPH) fell 23% compared to April 2006. This brought the year-to-date GPH performance to down 10% at a national level compared to 2006. This means that the national "norm" for weather and utilization-adjusted rounds demand through April should be down roughly 5%.
Performance across Pellucid’s 24 weather-based regions varies but the breadth numbers show how widespread the carnage was with 13 of 24 regions showing declines of 2% or more for the month. This puts the year-to-date breadth ratio (favorable to unfavorable) at 6:16 with the remaining 2 regions in neutral territory. As one bright spot in the current report, Pellucid’s comparison of the weather results from March, compared to Golf Datatech’s rounds demand report, showed the industry at a national level performed on par with the favorable results from last month. This is one of the few months in recent history that the industry has kept pace in rounds demand with favorable weather which is a positive sign.
Pellucid President Jim Koppenhaver comments on the current results saying, "As I was compiling the numbers across the key regions for the month, I had a sinking feeling in my stomach as region after region’s results were in negative territory. Given our experience in the 18 months we’ve been tracking weather impact against rounds demand, this would portend that April’s rounds numbers when released next month by Golf Datatech and NGF will be down by 10% or more for the month and drag the year-to-date numbers further into negative territory."
