In May 1967 Ed Mitchell, founder of Mitchell® Golf Equipment Company was elected to PGA membership. At the time he was serving as the Assistant Golf Professional at The Country Club of Jackson, Michigan. Ed served his 5-year apprenticeship under L. P. "Chuck" Smith and started his 40-year membership career as Class Jr. A.
Golf as both a game and business has been Ed’s life pursuit. He has had two successful careers in the golf profession, first as a club professional and currently as an equipment manufacturer. He has maintained his membership in the PGA and is currently a Life Member.
Ed began his career in golf as a caddy at the age of 11 in 1955. He advanced into the bag room and then became the pro shop manager before turning professional in 1962. After serving as Head Professional at Clio C. C. & Shenandoah Golf & C. C. in Michigan, Ed moved to Florida and was Director of Golf at Sabal Palms G. C. and Bonaventure Country Club in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
In 1988 Ed founded Mitchell® Golf Equipment Company in Dayton, Ohio and during the past 19 years has made it the premier manufacturer of golf club performance and repair equipment. The Steelclub® and TourGauge® Angle Machines are recognized as the industry standard worldwide.
Recently Ed started his third career in golf by forming Mitchell® Publishing Company. During his time as golf professional in Florida, Ed was also a golf writer for Broward Life Magazine and was a member of The Golf Writers Association. He plans to publish golf related books on a variety of golf subjects including technical publications on golf club performance and repair.
"While living in Florida I became friends with Oscar Fraley, author of the Untouchables and writer for Golf Magazine," states Ed. "Oscar introduced me to Herb Graffis whom I admire greatly for what he meant to golf. Because of their inspiration, I plan to publish books that help my fellow golf professionals advance their careers."
Ed feels he is very fortunate to have served the golf industry for forty years and is proud to be part of The PGA of America. He served the association at both the section and national levels on Rules & Club Relations Committees, as Officer of the Section and Chapter and instructor at PGA business schools & The PGA Junior Golf Academy.
"Golf is both a great game and rewarding business," Ed says, "and I am looking forward to my next 40 years in golf. I encourage all those in the business to continue golf’s great traditions and to make the game even better for those who follow."
