The return of The Open to Carnoustie has resulted in an entry of 2425 players. The entry last year at Hoylake was 2428.
The entry includes 102 players who are exempt from Regional Qualifying, the two IFQs still to be played and Local Final Qualifying. This number could be increased by a further 16 from the following categories.
First 2 European Tour members and any European Tour members tying for 2nd place, not exempt, in a cumulative money list taken from all official PGA European Tour events from OWGR week 19 up to and including the Open de France and including The U.S. Open.
The leading player, not exempt, in the first 10 and ties of each of the 2007 Smurfit Kappa European Open and the 2007 Barclays Scottish Open.

First 2 USPGA Tour members and any USPGA Tour members tying for 2nd place, not exempt, in a cumulative money list taken from the USPGA Tour Players Championship and the five USPGA Tour events leading up to and including the 2007 AT&T.
The leading player, not exempt, in the first 10 and ties of each of the 2007 AT&T and the 2007 John Deere Classic.
The leading 4 players, not exempt, in the 2007 Mizuno Open.
The first two and anyone tying for 2nd place, not exempt, in a cumulative money list taken from all official Japan Golf Tour events from the 2006 Japan PGA Championship up to and including the 2006 Mizuno Open.
The Amateur Champion 2007.
The remaining places will be filled by qualifiers from International Final Qualifying (Europe), International Final Qualifying (America) and Local Final Qualifying at Downfield, Monifieth, Montrose and Panmure bringing the total field to 156 competitors.
Regional Qualifying will be played at Royal Dublin on Tuesday 3 July and the remaining 15 Regional Qualifying competitions on Wednesday 4 July, leading to Local Final Qualifying on Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 July.
