MAGGIE VALLEY, N.C. – One of Western North Carolina’s most prestigious junior golf tournaments returns this July after a two-year hiatus.
The 2007 Jane Marville WNC Junior Golf Championship is July 9-10 at the new Maggie Valley Club. The tourney was an annual event from 1988 through 2004, but wasn’t held the last two summers because of major renovations to the golf course and clubhouse.
It’s open to all male and female junior golfers from ages 7 to 17. Competition is divided by gender into four age groups: 10 and under, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-17. The two younger divisions play nine holes each day, while the older divisions play 18 holes each day.
The tournament was founded in 1988 by Ted Staats, Maggie Valleys golf pro at the time. Staats recruited two club members – Ted and Jane Marville – in the parking lot the morning of the first tourney to work as volunteers. The Marville, along with several other members, embraced the tourney and Staats eventually named it after Jane Marville.
"Current head golf professional Mike Fox hopes to recapture the event’s prestige, and the Marvilles will again be volunteering.
"It’s going to be a wonderful tournament now that we have such nice facilities for the kids to use," said Jane Marville. Our members look forward to it and have put in a lot of time and effort. We try to make it as close to a professional tournament as we can."
Former participants include Western Carolina University standout Matt Cook, UNC-Greensboro standout Nathan Stamey, and former PGA Tour qualifier Ty Tryon.
Entry fee is $45 per golfer and includes: green fees, lunch both days, dinner both days, trophies for the top finishers in each division, plus a practice round on Sunday, July 8.
The deadline to enter is July 5. For information, contact Maggie Valley Club’s golf shop at (828) 926-6013.
