OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Players Turf Systems has built greens on ridges, under domes and they’ve even built island greens. During the week of the U.S. Open, they faced a challenge they never thought they’d face. They were asked to build a green on a barge on the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh.
"I received a call from TaylorMade-adidas Golf asking me if we could do this," explained Ray Sever, Players Turf Systems Director of Sales. "They were planning an industry event at a restaurant along the Monongahela and they wanted to have a shot-making contest for the guests."
In order for the contest to be realistic, the "green" had to have the characteristics of a real grass green. The ball would have to hold the green and roll true. This is the forte of Players Turf Systems’ greens.
"We excel at creative opportunities like this," Sever said. "The green had to be a bull’s eye of sorts. They wanted the outer ring to be sand, an inner area with a different color of sand and then the green with a hole in the center."
One of the challenges of the construction and design of the green was the awkward dimensions of the barge. It was 125 feet long, but only 26 feet wide and the barge would be anchored 50 yards away from shore.
"In order to have a fair contest," said Sever, "the green had to be receptive to shots. Thankfully, we have a lot of experience building both target greens for ranges as well as practice greens for chipping and pitch shots. We knew that we could deliver what they wanted."
