PINEHURST, N.C. (Aug. 5, 2007) – The U.S. may have taken its lumps in recent Ryder Cup matches, but at the 12-year-old level, the Americans have plenty of game when they square off against international competition. Team USAdrubbed the International side 11 ½ to 4 ½ on Sunday in the second annual U.S. Kids Golf World Cup played on Pinehurst No. 2.
It was the second straight lopsided win for the U.S., which won 12 of 17 matches against the International team here a year ago. The teams were chosen based on scores from the U.S. Kids World Championship, which was played Aug. 2-4 at Pinehurst Resort and several other courses in the area. This year’s international team drew players from 32 countries that were represented in the World Championship. Players from 45 U.S. states qualified for the Championship, which is the world’s largest golf tournament for boys and girls under 12.
On the same course where the 1951 Ryder Cup was staged, the U.S. dropped only two of six girls matches and two of 10 boys matches. Beau Hossler of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., had the shot of the day – a hole in one from 160 yards on No. 9 – en route to his 4 and 3 win over Wade Chen of Canada.
