SAN DIEGO—A San Diego couple has become the first husband-wife team to launch a Total Golf Adventures franchise in the North County of San Diego, it was announced today by Joshua Jacobs, president and founder of this fast-growing national at-school, after-school program.
The couple, Kevin and Millie McDermott, has a long history in the golf industry since he retired from the U.S. Marine Corps 12 years ago. Both are graduates of the San Diego Golf Academy (SDGA), a 16-month program at where they earned degrees in business, specializing in the golf industry.
Before acquiring the Total Golf Adventures franchise, Kevin, a USGTF Golf Teaching Professional, was the Director of Instruction at the golf school on-site at San Luis Rey Golf Course where he was assisted by his wife. Both are avid golfers, Kevin with a single digit handicap and Millie not far behind. Kevin also played for the base golf team while stationed at Camp Pendleton while Millie has supported the summer camp program there.
"We’ve provided research for many of the major brands in the golf industry since graduating the golf academy," says McDermott. "Millie and I knew we wanted to start our own golf business and after researching TGA it was clear we had found a perfect fit." "Introducing golf to children in elementary schools will be so enjoyable, Millie says. "We wish the program would have been there when our five girls were in school. They could have all been playing golf for some college team by now."
"This is definitely a first for Total Golf Adventures," beams Jacobs, who founded this concept about four years ago. "We are excited about opening the North County territory in San Diego, and we are confident that not only will their golf background be a plus, but having a woman’s touch working with the schools and parents will be a valuable tool in building their business."
McDermott’s territory will include: Carlsbad, Encinitas, Delmar, Rancho Santa Fe, Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos and Escondido.
With the addition of the North County, Total Golf Adventures has 36 programs, in 21 states.
The TGA curriculum was developed with input from PGA Professionals and PhD’s in Child Development and Education. Their input has ensured that TGA teaches golf in a manner that is easy for children to learn and retain while reinforcing educational concepts. In addition to instruction, students learn to: keep score, count strokes (addition/subtraction); judge distances to the golf hole; (visual perception); and, study golf rules and etiquette (reading rule books by the USGA and National Golf Foundation).
Total Golf Adventures, the rapidly growing junior golf organization that has put close to 30,000 K-8th grade students through its at-school, after-school programs in four years, just added Staples to a growing list of partners/sponsors. Participating with TGA are: Nicklaus Golf Equipment, the official provider of junior golf clubs; Garb, Inc., the official provider of apparel for participants and staff; Divix Golf, designer and manufacturer of a patented divot tool, Mini Hat Clip, and Groover; and Almost Golf Ball’s P3 Ball, providing a safe, practice ball for TGA programs, and Izzo, which is providing golf teaching aids and practice tools to help make the game fun for students to learn.
Total Golf Adventures (www.totalgolfadventures.com) is endorsed and named as the official junior golf initiative by the National High School Golf Coaches Association (NHSGCA) and the Golf Range Association of America (GRAA); is a national supporting organization of the After School Alliance, are a corporate advocate and a partner of the President’s Challenge on Physical Fitness.
