MALVERN, Pa. — (September 6, 2007) – Ukee Washington, the popular morning and noon news anchor for CBS-3 television in Philadelphia, has teamed up with CBS-3 sports director Beasley Reece to challenge two of the greatest Philadelphia Flyers, Brian Propp and Gary Dornhoeffer, in the new Celebrity Skills Challenge portion of the TD Banknorth Divine 9. The Celebrity Skills Challenge, presented by Yuengling Brewery and TaylorMade-Adidas Golf, will take place at the end of the two separate competitions in the TD Banknorth Divine 9 Open at White Manor Country Club on Friday, September 14.
Washington, already serving as honorary chairman of the four-year-old event, sees the added spectacle of a Celebrity Skills Challenge as an exclamation point on the end of what is already the Philadelphia area’s most popular charity golf day.
"When we heard we were going to get a chance to take on the Propper and Dorny, I couldn’t say yes fast enough," said Washington, getting the early jump in the trash-talking derby. "They better bring their best, because they’re going to need it."
"We know both of those guys are good at talking,”
answered Propp. "Now we’ll see how good they are at backing up all that talk."
All four of the popular Philadelphia celebrities are single-digit handicap players. They will compete in a skills competition immediately following the afternoon celebrity-am. The day begins with a pro-am featuring Philadelphia Section PGA professionals and three amateurs.
The Celebrity Skills Challenge combines putting, chipping, pitching and recovery shots in a unique points format. The format was devised by David Peryer of GolfChamp, the statistical analysis company that specializes in short game competitions.
The TD Banknorth Divine 9 Open, founded by Jeff Dittus to honor the memory of his father, longtime White Manor member Mort Dittus, raises funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The golf tournament and subsequent auction have raised more than $500,000 for the charity.
Spots still remain for amateurs wishing to play in the morning Pro-Am shotgun or the afternoon Celebrity-Am shotgun. To reserve a spot or for more information on the tournament, call the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society office at 610-521-8274 ext. 228, or go to the website at www.divine9open.org.
