Pellucid Corp. reports that Golf Playable Hours (GPH) for the month of August at the national level declined 4.4% compared to last year. The unfavorable month breaks a string of "comparable weather" months this summer and will likely have a negative impact on August rounds played when released. August’s results dragged the year-to-date (YTD) GPH measure down to -2.9% compared to 2006.
Performance across Pellucid’s 24 weather-based regions showed the decline was concentrated in 7 regions which suffered significant declines vs. August ’06. As a result of the relatively narrow band of regions impacted however, the regional breadth figures for August YTD actually improved slightly to 1:1.4 (5 regions with favorable GPH vs. 7 regions with unfavorable GPH and 12 neutral vs. YA). On an encouraging note, the July rounds played results reported by Golf Datatech showed rounds outperforming weather for the 3rd consecutive month. This positive trend brought the YTD weather-adjusted rounds differential to +1.3 points (each point translates to outperforming or lagging weather by roughly 5MM rounds nationally on an annual basis).
Pellucid President Jim Koppenhaver comments on the current results saying, "As forecast, Mother Nature is not being as benign to our industry as 2006 at a national level. Compared to 2006 however where we had favorable weather and lackluster rounds performance, the summer rounds demand trends are showing early and potentially gathering signs of strength for which we’ve been looking. As a foundation to demonstrate that we can grow rounds demand, we have to see some periods where we’ve either been able to outperform favorable weather or, as is in the current unfolding trend, hold our own against unfavorable weather. While it’s yet early to declare victory, this is one of the first encouraging trends we’ve seen since we began weather impact tracking over 2 years ago."
