Highly touted Optix putter, legendary Oversize Grip keeps sales soaring
WARREN, Mich. – For nearly 30 years Tiger Shark was a company that was always on the fringe of the golf industry. They were best known for uniquely designed putters with oversize grips. In 2000 Dean and Darin Dingman took over the operation of Tiger Shark and today, their products are swimming in the mainstream of the golf industry.
The star of the Tiger Shark line is the Optix premium putter. In this day of alignment-aid putters, the Optix takes putter alignment to the nth degree. The innovative highlighted alignment system is enhanced by LINE-M-UP, a ball marking tool that replicates the three lines on the putter so that when the ball is set on the green and properly aligned, the golfer can see these three lines continuing through the ball. This is an unprecedented visual alignment in the putter industry.
The impact of the Optix has resulted in glowing reviews by such noted mainstream golf magazines as Golf Digest, Golf Illustrated and Golf Tips.
"We’re obviously quite thrilled with attention and recognition of the Optix putter," said Tiger Shark President Dean Dingman, "but the Optix is more than the best aligned putting system in the game. It’s a great feeling putter. The head is constructed of milled aluminum for even density and superior balance as well as a great soft feel."
In GolfTest USA’s recent putter test, the Optix was ranked the highest in alignment and accuracy out of 30 putters tested by independent testers at GolfTest USA. The exceptional marks earned the Optix Golf Test USA’s "Seal of Excellence."
Of course no Tiger Shark putter would be complete without their legendary Oversize Grip and the Optix is no exception.
"The oversize grip has been the hallmark of the Tiger Shark brand since its inception in the 1980s," said Dingman. "To date the company has sold more than 1 million putter grips since launching the jumbo grip more than 20 years ago."
Recently Tiger Shark teamed up with Winn, Inc. to retool the jumbo grip. They came up with the 2007 UltraTac Tiger Shark putter grip made with Winn’s V17 Ultimate Performance Material which helps absorb sweat. The UltraTac grip is their most durable material to date and firmer than traditional Winn grips. The lightweight grip is also designed with Winn’s Advanced Vertical Seam process which gives you the premium properties of a wrapped grip, but with a virtually seamless appearance.
The Dingman’s plan for Tiger Shark’s success also included upgrading their entire line which included acquiring the talent and class of World Golf Hall of Fame golfer Juli Inkster.
"Juli has made an incredible impact on our company," said Dingman. "Not only has she brought her extensive knowledge to Tiger Shark and been instrumental in the design properties of co-designing her Signature Series, she has been the classiest spokesperson in golf. We debuted the second generation of Juli Inkster Signature Series club set last fall and they have been selling quite well."
The culmination of the Dingman’s efforts has come on the bottom line. Sales have risen 30 percent annually since they took over the operation.
"Our success has been the product of a lot of hard work and vision of a lot of people," explained Dingman. "Our growth has been steady and we have maintained our focus."
As a result of this focus and hard work Tiger Shark has more than 1,000 accounts in the U.S. with major golf retailers such as: Edwin Watts, GolfSmith, Pro Golf, Nevada Bob’s, PGA Tour Stops, Golf Headquarters and Golfers Warehouse.
