Matthew Baldwin (Royal Birkdale) and Dale Whitnell (Five Lakes), two of England’s triumphant team at the Home Internationals in Ireland, have been chosen to represent the English Golf Union in the Federal Amateur Open Championship at the Federal Golf Club in Canberra, Australia, on 28th September to 1st October.

Baldwin, 21 (pictured left – photo courtesy of Tom Ward), is the current Lancashire Champion, who reached the semi-finals of the Portuguese Amateur and the last 16 of the English Amateur Championship this year before making his full England debut last week in Ireland.

A former Under 16 and Boy International, Baldwin was England boy captain in 2004 and has represented the EGU in many overseas events in recent years. He also played for GB&I against Europe in the Jacques Leglise Trophy. Last year, he finished third in the Scottish Open Stroke Play and in the Danish Amateur

Whitnell, 19, was capped at boys level last year and after a highly successful two years made his full England debut last week scoring five points from his six matches.

In 2006, Whitnell won the Daily Telegraph Junior Championship, finished runner-up in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters and third in the Carris Trophy. This year, after being included in the England Under 21 Squad, the Essex teenager has won the North of England Youths Championship, finished runner-up in the French Open Stroke Play and the Tillman Trophy, third in the Russian Amateur and fourth in the South of England Stroke Play.

The Federal Amateur Open Championship will host an international field of 160 players. There will be a cut after 36 holes, the leading 60 and ties qualifying for the final two rounds.
