Thirty ranked tournaments slated throughout southeast

TAMPA, Fla. — The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour (HJGT) in the southeastern part of the United States will launch its inaugural tour in January 2008.

The Tour has 14 dates secured beginning with The Panhandle Junior Golf Classic at The Moors Golf and Lodge in Milton, Fla., Jan. 5 and 6.

The current schedule represents the first half of a schedule of 36-hole events that will culminate with The Junior Classic at the TPC of Tampa Bay, July 9 and 10. The rest of the schedule will run well into the fall of 2008. Included in the full schedule will be six "Major" tournaments.

The HJGT is the product of Mario Conte, a former junior and collegiate standout golfer.

"When I was a junior player, I was fortunate to have played all over," said Conte, "and I want to give this experience to junior golfers throughout the southeast."

Conte plans to make the junior golf tournament experience available to the broadest geographical spectrum as possible. The existing schedule has tournaments set for Florida, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina and includes an attractive array of tournament courses.

"We want each and every tournament to be a memorable experience for all the golfers in the field," explained Conte.

Membership in the HJGT is free and all tournaments are ranked by the National Junior Golf Scoreboard (njgs.com). Each event will have four divisions including Boys and Girls—ages 12-14 and 15-18. Points are awarded to the top 10 finishers in each division and these points will qualify the top golfers for the season-ending Tour Championship. Winners of the six "Major Championships" where points are doubled will automatically qualify for the Tour Championship.

The three Major Championships already on the schedule include: The Hilton Head Junior Shootout at Palmetto Dunes on Hilton Head, S.C. (Feb. 23-24); The HJGT Spring Classic at the Georgia Club in Statham, Ga. (May 3-4) and The Orlando Junior Classic at Champions Gate in Davenport, Fla. (June 21-22).

"We believe that we will offer junior golfers in the regions we’ll visit an opportunity to experience tournament golf of the highest quality," offered Conte. "We will bring to them the competitive nature and the life lessons that only golf can provide."
