Experienced mid-amateur field set to compete on acclaimed Fazio-Tatum designed landscape.
CARMEL, Calif. (Oct. 8, 2007)—The 2007 Stocker Cup Invitational Golf Tournament, held October 11-14 at The Preserve Golf Club in Carmel will boast another strong, experienced field, which includes multiple state champions and players of the year from coast to coast.
Local players include such Northern California luminaries such as two-time Stocker Cup winner Casey Boyns, who lives in nearby Pacific Groove and makes his living as a caddie at Pebble Beach. Boyns was won a pair of State Amateur Championships, has three times been named the Northern California Player of the Year and may be looking at a fourth after running off a string of NCGA victories over the summer.
Moving a bit farther north, we have another former champion, Randy Haag, who most recently qualified for match play at the 2007 U.S. Amateur at his home course, The Olympic Club in San Francisco. Haag has been dominating in the amateurgolf.com Tournament Series (Northern California) as well, winning all three events that he entered.
Jason Pridmore of Ventura, Calif., is another amateurgolf.com Tournament Series winner, having taken home the California Mid-Am at Stevinson Ranch.
Moving East, Brady Exber of Las Vegas is a member of the Southern Nevada Hall of Fame, and for good reason, having been named player of the year a record seven times.
Pat Tallent of Virginia will be one of the golfers logging the most miles to attend the event. Tallent is coming off a victory at the Virginia State Championship and was the low amateur of the 2004 U.S. Senior Open.
Sandy Harper, of Nanaimo, British Columbia, will be looking to become the second Canadian Stocker Cup champ, the first being Craig Doell in 2004. Harper has won the B.C. Mid-Amateur and Amateur Order of Merit in his career.
Lastly comes a first-time Stocker Cupper who is no stranger to high-level golf, Nathanial Crosby. Crosby obviously inherited his father Bing Crosby’s love of golf, and has competed in three Masters, two British Opens, one U.S. Open and four U.S. Amateurs. Interestingly, his father’s signature tournament the Crosby Clambake (now known as the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am) is held every year down the road at Pebble Beach.
amateurgolf.com will be on site throughout the tournament, providing daily coverage and a tournament video wrap-up which will be posted on the 15th, be sure to check back in with us to keep up with the action.
ABOUT THE STOCKER CUP:
The Stocker Cup, played in memory of Peter Stocker, is held each October at The Preserve Golf Club in Carmel. The field is comprised of 52 world-class mid-amateur invitees, who meet stringent eligibility requirements, and pay a minimal fee for their participation. Offering both NCGA and national Golfweek and amateurgolf.com Bridgestone Player Rankings points, the Stocker Cup also holds a one-day qualifying tournament for regional players who were not among the original invites. On September 28, eighteen competitors with a handicap index of 2.4 or lower vied for the final two A-list spots in the main tournament. (Brian Swenson and Harold Chuhlantseff both qualified at 76 at Stevinson Ranch.)
Those final A-list golfers are complimented by a matching number of qualified B-list competitors, with invitations extended to friends, relatives and associates of the late Peter Stocker, as well as to various sponsors and other supporters of the event. Every A-player is teamed with a B-player in a handicapped best-ball competition held simultaneously with the individual stroke-championship.
