The "Official Hybrid Club of the Mark Christopher Charity Classic" earned its stripes Sunday in Rancho Cucamonga.
A Nickent Golf 4DX Ironwood was in the bag of the Mark Christopher winner, making it the second year in a row that Nickent has claimed victory at the high-profile Nationwide Tour event. A Nickent hybrid was also in the bag of the second place finisher for the second year in a row.
Nickent was named the official hybrid of the event to celebrate their 4-year-anniversary of becoming the # 1 most played hybrid on the Nationwide Tour. In all, 33 Nickent hybrids (72% 4DX Ironwood) were in play at the "homecoming" event. The tournament is in the backyard of Nickent’s worldwide headquarters located in Walnut, CA.
The win was Nickent’s 8th victory on the PGA Tours this year and the company’s 21st win over the last three seasons on the two PGA Tours.
The winner of this week’s event, a long time Nickent user, claimed his third victory on the Nationwide Tour Sunday, his first since 2000. The 35-year-old native of Wales and Augusta State University All-American battled 45 mile per hour Santa Ana winds to claim the championship in a playoff. It was the 5th time he has been in the final pairing this season.
"I’ve had a few close ones," said the Cucamonga champion, who moved to fourth on the Nationwide Tour money list. "This is great. It isn’t necessarily a monkey off of my back because I’ve won before. But it is nice to win again. It was the first playoff of my career, so to win one of these is good, too."
Three players using Nickent hybrids finished in Top 5 of the Mark Christopher Charity Classic, including Nickent Staff player Brad Adamonis. The 1st and 2nd place finishers are not endorsed to play Nickent products.
In fact, the majority of players that play Nickent golf clubs are not on staff with Nickent, including the #4, #7, #9, #11, #16 and # 19 players on the current Nationwide Tour money list. The Top 25 players will "graduate" to the PGA Tour next year.
"I was pretty much a lock before this week, but this definitely seals the deal," said the winner, who earned a $305,921 victory paycheck. "Moving higher on the money list will help me plan my schedule a little better next year. Everyone has a lifetime dream of playing on the PGA Tour and I can’t wait to fulfill mine next year."
The runner-up at the tournament, the Scottsdale roommate of star Nickent staff player Jeff Quinney, finished second for the fourth time this season. He finished runner-up at the South Georgia Classic and has earned three second-place finishes in his last five events (National Mining Association Pete Dye Classic, Oregon Classic and the Mark Christopher Charity Classic).
"I know I’m going to get a win at some point because I’m playing so well," said the #7 player on the money list. "If not this year, then next year. I’m disappointed to not win but being in the playoff means I’m playing well. It was another good week for me."
