Mukilteo, WA. (October 10, 2007) – Cybergolf’s editorial director, Jeff Shelley, has been voted by his peers to receive the 2007 Distinguished Service Award by the Northwest Golf Media Association. The award presentation will be held October 22nd during the NWGMA’s 7th Annual Tournament & Banquet at Plateau Golf Club in Sammamish, Wash.
Jeff has been writing about golf in the Pacific Northwest and around the world for over 20 years. Since 2000, he has been the editorial director for www.cybergolf.com, a site that contains golf-related news and information, andwww.golfconstructionnews.com, a subscriber service that tracks golf projects around the United States. The e-marketing tools created by Cybergolf, founded in 1995 by CEO Dan Murnan, have enabled the company to become the American golf industry’s largest provider of Internet services. Over the past seven years, Jeff has edited, written and overseen the posting of nearly 5,500 articles for www.cybergolf.com.
Jeff has authored, edited and/or published seven books, including five related to golf. He authored three editions of the book, "Golf Courses of the Pacific Northwest," while logging over 180,000 miles researching golf facilities in an area over 1 million square miles in size. The 640-page third edition contains over 550 golf courses that he visited and/or played. He also wrote and published "The Northwest Golfer’s Almanac," and co-authored and helped publish the 438-page history book, "Championships & Friendships: The First 100 Years of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association."
Shelley has been a golf writer for Alaska and Horizon in-flight magazines for over 10 years and is a regular contributor to the PNGA’s "Pacific Northwest Golfer" magazine. He is the former media director of the Fred Couples Invitational, a two-day Seattle-based event in the 1990s that featured many of the PGA Tour’s top pros. He has been the managing editor for three golf magazines, freelanced in many regional and national publications, and is an honorary member of the Western Washington and Northwest Turfgrass associations.
Jeff is the also co-founder, first president, and current treasurer of the NWGMA, a group that has grown to over 100 members representing newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations, Internet sites and golf associations inWashington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and British Columbia. The 12-year-old organization now has affiliated chapters inOregon and British Columbia.
Previous winners of the award include: Bill Yeend, long-time radio broadcaster for KIRO and other Seattle stations; Blaine Newnham, columnist and associate editor of the Seattle Times; Bruce King, former Sports Director for KOMO-TV in Seattle; Bob Robinson, long-time golf writer and columnist for the Oregonian in Portland; Margaret Maves, a Portland-area media volunteer who assisted with dozens of PGA and LPGA Tour and amateur tournaments over several decades; and Doug McArthur, former Tournament Director for the LPGA Tour’s Safeco Classic.
