HOUSTON (Oct. 16) – Tournament officials announced a $2,206,700 donation to local charity from the net proceeds of the 2007 Shell Houston Open PGA TOUR event. That brings the total of charity dollars raised by the Houston Golf Association and its golf-related activities to nearly $50 million since 1974.
John Hofmeister, president of Shell Oil Company, made the announcement on the steps of City Hall. Mayor Bill White proclaimed it "Shell Houston Open – a chance for children Day" in Houston because of the tournament’s focus on local children’s charities. Steve Timms, president of Houston Golf Association, said: "We couldn’t accomplish this if it were not for thousands of volunteers who work each year at our event. Our HGA members and other volunteers are truly the engine that drives us toward our goal to help kids in our community."
Nearly 87 percent of the funds, or almost $43 million, has been generated since Shell Oil Company became title sponsor of Houston’s event in 1992. The 10th oldest event on the PGA TOUR, the Shell Houston Open will be played March 31-April 6, 2008 on the Redstone Golf Club Tournament Course.
