CAMBRIDGE, Mass., October 17, 2007 – The field is set for the second annual Handa Cup to be held December 15-16 at the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, Florida. The Handa Cup pits U.S.-born LPGA Legends professionals versus a team of World Legends professionals in an international match play competition.
Returning U.S. team captain Kathy Whitworth and World team captain Hisako "Chako" Higuchi are poised to lead 12 players each into the only international match play competition taking place on U.S. soil this year.
Anchoring the U.S. Team and making her first Handa Cup appearance is LPGA and World Golf Hall of Famer Beth Daniel, winner of 33 LPGA Tour events, including the 1990 LPGA Championship. No stranger to team match play, Daniel previously competed in eight Solheim Cups and most recently served as assistant captain to the U.S. Team in this year’s Solheim Cup in Sweden. In addition to Daniel, five more Hall of Famers will tee it up for the U.S. side: Amy Alcott, Pat Bradley, JoAnne Carner, Sandra Haynie and Patty Sheehan.
Pat Bradley was undefeated in the 2006 Handa Cup, going 3-0-0 and earning 6 points for the United States. The U.S. team defeated the World team, 27-11.
The 2007 Handa Cup World Team features 3-time LPGA Major winner Jan Stephenson of Australia and 15-time LPGA Tour winner Sally Little of South Africa. Canadien Golf Hall of Famer and 3-time LPGA Tour winner Dawn-Coe Jones will also compete for the World side. Last year’s top point winner for the World Team, Mieko Nomura of Japan, returns to battle for the 2007 Cup.
