Georgia New Number One Team

NEW YORK, NY—The final Golf World/Nike Golf Division I Coaches’ Poll of the fall season has been released, combining the resources of Golf World magazine, Nike Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). The complete results, including results from Divisions II, III and the NAIA, will appear in the November 9 issue of Golf World and can be viewed online now at www.golfworld.com.

Georgia replaces Charlotte as the number one team, earning 11 of the 24 first-place votes. The Bulldogs won the Brickyard Collegiate Championship (Oct. 7-9) and the Isleworth-UCF Invitational (Oct. 22-24). In their four fall starts, Georgia had two wins and two sixth-place finishes.

Previously top-ranked Charlotte fell to number two after being upset in the first round of last week’s Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship. The 49ers still earned seven first-place votes, thanks to winning their first three tournaments of the fall. The team is currently playing in its final fall event, the Pacific Invitational (Nov. 4-7). Rounding out the top-five are Alabama (No. 3), UCLA (No. 4) and Georgia Tech (No. 5).

New to the top-10 this week is UCLA, which jumped from No. 11 to No. 4. The Bruins didn’t play their first tournament until the last full week of October, however they won that event (Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge) and then took the title last week at the Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play. UCLA is hosting the CordeValle Collegiate this week (Nov. 5-7), its final fall tournament.

Also joining the top-10 is Duke (No. 9), ranked No. 13 in the previous coaches’ poll. The Blue Devils shared the team title at their home event, the Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic (Oct. 7-8). It was one of three top-five finishes for Duke during the fall season.

New to the top-25 are Indiana (No. 22), Virginia Tech (T-23) and North Carolina (No. 25). The Hoosiers had three top-five performances during the fall and finished no worse than sixth in any of their six starts. The Hokies tied for first-place in back-to-back events, The Intercollegiate at the Ridges (Oct. 12-14) and the Landfall Tradition (Oct. 26-28), to close out a very successful fall season. The Tar Heels also shared the team title at the Ridges before finishing fourth at the UNCG Bridgestone Golf Championship to end their fall season.
