Orlando-based mental performance coach helps golfers maximize their potential
ORLANDO, Fla. — Hypnotism has helped many people quit smoking, lose weight and improve their health. Now, Beth Pry, MA CH (certified hypnotist), has applied these techniques to golf with the formation of MindLinks.
"The difference between a sports psychologist and a mental performance coach is that a sports psychologist uses talk therapy to eliminate self-imposed limitations," explained Pry. "A mental performance coach eliminates those self-imposed limitations by using visualization, mental exercises and constructing new language patterns."
As an example, Pry spoke about a common problem among golfers. They are often easily distracted by a number of things such as noises, people moving during their swing, etc. The MindLinks method doesn’t eliminate those distractions, but turns them into positive elements of the round.
"Through hypnosis, we can eliminate the negative effects of these distractions by suggesting to golfers that they can draw upon those distractions to make them play better," said Pry. "This comes into play later in the round and keeps the golfers more focused as they tire."
The MindLinks system appears simple on the surface, but it is extremely intricate. The golfer is asked a series of questions which in and of themselves seem unrelated to the situation. In fact, they help the hypnotist to form a behavioral pattern that helps determine the proper procedure.
"This helps the golfer see and let go of the limits they have imposed on themselves," explained Pry, "and secondly it helps recapture the feeling of playing well and seeing yourself play well again."
Pry has applied the MindLinks system to pros on the Champions, Nationwide, Hooters, Grey Goose and Moonlight Tours with tremendous success. She has also worked extensively with competitive junior golfers in the American Junior Golf Association, Florida Junior Golf Association and the Arizona Junior Golf Association. She is a preferred consultant at Brad Brewer’s Golf Academy located at the award-winning Rosen Shingle Creek Golf Club in Orlando and served as a faculty member at the Professional Golfers Career College.
"We give the player the responsibility for their own success," she said. "Too often golfers will credit a lucky shirt, or hat for a good round, or a lucky tee for a good drive. We instill the feeling that it wasn’t these outside elements that made the difference; it was their ability and their ability alone that was responsible. Through this belief, their confidence grows and success becomes a more frequent occurrence."
