LAKE MARY, FL -Yong Joo of Orlando fired a 12-under-par total of 204 to win the fourth event on the NGA Hooters Pro Golf Tour’s Winter Series Thursday. The other big winner may have been the host course, Timacuan Golf Club, which proved to be a solid test for the field of 132, especially on the final round Thursday.
"Great golf course," was a common comment following play. "Tough track, especially where the pins were tucked today," was another.
The first-place check was $12,000 out of the $81,000 prize fund. The tour’s leading money winner, Jeff Corr of Longwood, tied for second with Hank Kim of Jonesboro, GA. Each shot 206 and pocketed $5,468.
"It’s a tough course; you have to put the ball in the right place to have a go at some of the pins," said Corr, who played Timacuan on a regular basis as a high school student at Lake Brantley years ago.
Timacuan, one of Florida’s top-ranked courses located in Lake Mary, just north of Orlando, hosted this event the past two years as well.
The Timacuan community and club are located off Rinehart Road near State Road 46-A in Lake Mary. Timacuan is ranked among the top courses in all of Florida. Designed in 1988 by Ron Garl and refurbished by Bobby Weed in 1995, Timacuan is a par 72 that features two distinctly different nines.
Prior to starting work on the layout, Garl spent time in Scotland studying Links-style architecture, and that research is very evident on Timacuan’s front nine. Sprawling bunkers, generous landing areas, oversized, undulating greens, and framing mounds combine to create a challenging and memorable nine holes.
The back nine has more of a Carolinas Low Country feel, with beautiful oak trees and tall pines providing the framing. One large body of water comes into play on 15, 16 and 17, demanding accuracy.
Nearly every green complex has closely-mown fringe areas, allowing for a variety of shot selections when players miss the green.
"I really liked the golf course," said Hooters Tour regular B.J. Pitzen of Ohio. "Driving the ball is the key, but you also really above to think your way around the course. It is definitely a good strategy golf course."
