Women’s Golf Association Announces Three New Members to 2008 Board
Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., November 30, 2007 – Karen Furtado of Bedford, New Hampshire has been named 2008-2009 President of the Board of Directors for the Executive Women’s Golf Association (EWGA), considered the largest U.S. amateur golf organization geared toward the schedules of working women and whose aim is to continue bringing more women into the game of golf. Furtado is the director of the Insurance Practice with Collaborative Consulting, a leading professional services firm based in Burlington, Mass.
Other 2008 officers of the EWGA Board of Directors announced at the association’s conference in early November include Immediate Past President Penny Hulbert, president, Links Financial LLC from the Tampa Bay, FL Chapter; and Secretary/Treasurer Margaret Downey, director of training development & culture, CSX Transportation, from the Jacksonville, FL Chapter.
Furtado has over 25 years of management and technical experience within the insurance industry with an extensive background in professional services and outsourcing management. A charter member of the EWGA Southern New Hampshire Chapter since 1994, she has served in a number of leadership positions within the chapter and the New England Section before joining the association’s board of directors in 2004. The 2007 President Elect, she has served as secretary for both the Association and EWGA Foundation boards of directors and was the 2006 EWGA Foundation Board President. Raised in Lowell, Massachusetts, Furtado holds a B.S. degree from Springfield College. She also is a board member and serves as the Vice Chair of the LPGA Foundation.
New EWGA Board Members
New members to the 2008 EWGA Board of Directors include Beth Hecht of New City, NJ, from the Northern New Jersey Chapter; Kathy O’Neal, Dallas, Texas, from the Dallas Chapter and Mary Phelan, Oakland, Mich., from the Metro Detroit Chapter.
Hecht is executive vice president, general counsel & secretary, MedPointe, Inc. in Somerset, NJ, responsible for worldwide legal affairs, compliance and risk management for this specialty pharmaceutical company. She has a B.A. degree from Amherst College and J.D. degree from Harvard Law School.
As senior vice president for societies for Dallas-based ClubCorp, O’Neal oversees new club development. She previously owned a consulting business for golf courses, golf resorts and other private clubs in the U.S. and internationally, and is the author of several books on golf course marketing. She is a paralegal graduate from Southwest Texas State University and holds an undergraduate degree from The University of Texas at Austin, as well as an M.B.A. from Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
Phelan is the director of sales for GMAC Financial Services in Auburn Hills, Michigan. She has held numerous assignments with the company across the United States and previously served in the U.S. Army. She has bachelors degrees in computer science and banking & finance from Mississippi State University and an M.B.A. from Regis University in Denver, Colorado.
Founded in 1991, the EWGA has touched the lives of over 85,000 women, providing opportunities to learn, play and enjoy the game of golf for business and for life. This not-for-profit membership association has over 120 chapters throughout the United States and international chapters in Canada and France, offering a wide range of golf, social and networking activities for new and experienced golfers.

The EWGA Board of Directors is responsible for leading and governing the EWGA, establishing its goals and policies; ensuring strategic planning; and providing fiduciary oversight of the association. The EWGA board representative from the PGA of America is Sandy Cross, director, marketing and sales, member of the Palm Beach County, FL Chapter; the USGA board representative is Barbara Douglas, vice chairman of the USGA Women’s Committee from the Phoenix-Valley of Sun, AZ Chapter; the LPGA board representative is Bill Susetka, chief marketing officer, member of the Daytona Beach Area, FL chapter; and the communications representative is Susan Reed, editor-in-chief, Golf for Women magazine, New York City, NY Chapter.
