Orlando, Fla., (Dec. 4, 2007) – Golfweek, the publication preferred by serious golfers, has just released its largest publication with Golfweek’s Definitive Guide to the Golf Life 2008, featuring Golfweek’s Best Residential and Resort Courses lists, as well as the first annual Golfweek’s Best Courses of the Caribbean & Mexico list.
Within this special issue dedicated to both residential and resort courses, Golfweek honors the top 100 in each category. And for the first time, Golfweek takes its rankings international by ranking the top 50 courses in the Caribbean and Mexico
"Every year that we publish our ratings of the top-100 resort courses and the top-100 residential courses, I’m amazed at the quality of the design work out there," said Golfweek’s Best Courses program director and architecture editor, Bradley S. Klein. "The lists of properties selected here read like a discrete shopper’s buying guide for where to stay and where to live in the U.S. — and now, also in the Caribbean and Mexico."
For the third year in a row, Golfweek’s No. 1-rated residential golf course is the Tom Fazio-designed Wade Hampton Club in Cashiers, N.C. At an elevation of 3,650 ft., Wade Hampton Club is often referred to as "Tom Fazio’s Masterpiece." The Jack Nicklaus designed Castle Pines in Colorado moves into the No. 2 spot on the list, up from No. 3 last year.
The No. 1 and No. 2 spots on this year’s Resort Courses list are repeats. With the No. 1-rated resort golf course being the Tom Doak-designed Pacific Dunes in Bandon, Ore. Opened in 2001 at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, Pacific Dunes features rippling fairways, natural bunkers and 60-foot sand dunes. Coming in at No. 2 is Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif., a 1919 design by D. Grant & J Neville, with subsequent input by H. Chandler Egan and Alister MacKenzie and later, Jack Nicklaus, that features spectacular oceanfront holes.
"Courses of Distinction" are also featured in Golfweek’s Definitive Guide to the Golf Life. These courses are on the raters’ ballot, and are either too new to be included or are highly rated courses that did not appear on the list.
The ratings are derived directly from the annual list of Golfweek’s Best Courses, published each March since 1997. Golfweek’s Best Golf Courses are ranked by 450 raters throughout the country, who judge on the basis of 10 evaluation criteria. Rankings are calculated using a statistically rigorous process.
