Tom Fazio design earns national acclaim soon after June 2007 debut in El Paso
EL PASO, Texas, Dec. 10, 2007 – Butterfield Trail Golf Club, a Tom Fazio-designed championship layout in El Paso, has been named by GOLF Magazine as one of the "Top 10 New Courses You Can Play" in its January 2008 issue, currently on newsstands.
"We are pleased to see Butterfield Trail Golf Club among the top 10 new golf courses and consider this a compliment for the city of El Paso, the entire Airport and KemperSports team," said Patrick T. Abeln, director of aviation at El Paso International Airport.
The Southwest design, which debuted in June 2007, was the only Texas-based course to make the magazine’s annual list, featuring the 10 best new public-access courses opened in 2007. The collection of best new courses was selected with input from GOLF Magazine’s course-ranking panelists and editors.
"The fairways are wide enough to accommodate shots in the roaring west Texas winds, but there are sufficient strategic options to keep you interested," GOLF Magazine’s editors wrote in the January 2008 issue. "The Trail’s final stop is its finest, a classic gambler’s par-5 of 566 yards that buttonhooks to the right around a lake."
Developed and owned by the city of El Paso’s Department of Aviation and managed by KemperSports, Butterfield Trail Golf Club features a championship layout designed by world-renowned course architect Tom Fazio. Fazio took advantage of the desert’s distinctive topography, including natural sand dunes and native flora and fauna, which highlight the Southwest’s natural beauty. Butterfield Trail, stretching more than 7,300 yards from the back tees, also features more than 55 feet of dramatic elevation changes. The 18-hole, public golf course is complemented by a spacious practice facility and an 8,800-square-foot clubhouse, complete with the full-service Salida del Sol restaurant and bar and banquet and special events facilities. Butterfield Trail Golf Club serves as a high-end anchor to the airport’s surrounding property and business as well as a catalyst for future commercial development.
