PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – United States Ryder Cup Captain Paul Azinger announced the order of play for the first two days of the 37th Ryder Cup, returning to Morning Foursomes, followed by Afternoon Four-Balls. The 37th Ryder Cup will be conducted Sept. 19-21, at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.
The format for the first two days of competition was last utilized in 1999, when the U.S. rallied for a 14½ to 13½ victory at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. Since 1973, when the Ryder Cup first featured Morning Foursomes and Afternoon Four-Balls in its opening two days, the U.S. has registered a 3-2-1 record.
The order of play with Foursomes preceding Four-Balls each day was repeated in 1987, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1995 and 1999.
Europe routed the U.S. in the past two Ryder Cups by identical 18½ to 9½ margins, utilizing the Morning Four-Ball and Afternoon Foursome format the first two days of each competition. The final day of competition is reserved for 12 singles matches.
The U.S. Ryder Cup Team’s first eight selections will be determined following the 90th PGA Championship, Aug. 7-10, at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Mich.
Azinger will select the final members of the 12-member 2008 American Team with four Captain’s picks, Tuesday, Sept. 2, at a news conference to be announced.
