Georgia Remains Top Team
NEW YORK, NY-The first Golf World/Nike Golf Division I Coaches’ Poll of the spring season has been released, combining the resources of Golf World magazine, Nike Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). The complete results, including results from Divisions II, III and the NAIA, will appear in the February 22 issue of Golf World and can be viewed online now at www.golfworld.com.
Georgia remains in the number one spot, earning 13 of the 23 first-place votes. The Bulldogs won twice this fall and begin the spring portion of their season next week at the Puerto Rico Classic. They are led by a pair of freshman, Harris English and Russell Henley. English won two titles in the fall and sported a 70.78 stroke average. Henley had two top-10 finishes and a 71.0 average. Rounding out the top-five are Charlotte (No. 2), Alabama (No. 3), UCLA (No. 4) and Oklahoma State (No. 5).
The biggest mover in the poll is Tennessee, jumping from No. 23 in the last coaches’ poll of the fall season to No. 11. The Volunteers took the title at the Ping-Arizona Intercollegiate to start the spring, after winning their final event of the fall.
Joining the top-25 are UNLV (No. 21) and East Tennessee State (No. 24). The Rebels and Buccaneers finished second and fifth, respectively, at the Ping-Arizona.
