Golfweek’s National Panel Of Raters Announce 2008 U.S. Course Rankings

March 7, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla., (March 6, 2008) – In its March 8 issue, Golfweek, the publication preferred by serious golfers, published the 2008 Golfweek’s Best Classic and Modern Courses lists, marking the twelfth year Golfweek has ranked the best Modern and Classic courses in the U.S. Golfweek has devoted 23 pages of its March 8 issue to Golfweek’s Best Course rankings, including state-by-state ratings of public-access courses.

"Despite a slowdown in the golf development market, there’s no shortage of quality with the new courses,” said Bradley S. Klein, national director of Golfweek’s Best Courses rating program.

Two of the six newcomers to the Golfweek’s Best Modern Courses list are in the top 20. Sebonack Golf Club, No. 14, is a Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak design in Southampton, N.Y. And Chambers Bay, rated No. 17, in University Place, Wash., is a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design that already has been awarded the 2015 U.S. Open.

“That’s pretty impressive and justifies the cover story we devoted to Chambers Bay back on June 16, 2007,” Klein said.

The Golfweek’s Best annual issue identifies the best courses from two distinctly different eras – courses designed pre- and post-1960. The exclusive system acknowledges that before 1960, the year that separates Classic from Modern, most course designers relied on native contours for course features. After 1960, as Arnold Palmer and television combined to popularize the game, designers began to utilize high-tech engineering and advanced mechanical means to transform the landscape to suit their design.

“Our annual rankings of Golfweek’s Best Modern and Classic courses continue to grow in prominence each and every year,” said Terry Olson, vice president/publisher of Golfweek. “From billboards on major interstates to daily newspapers nationwide, the Golfweek’s Best logo is being utilized as a marketing tool that justifies higher real estate values, premium greens fees and dues, as well as creating membership satisfaction for those that call one of Golfweek’s Best ranked courses their home course.

“With more than 17,000 courses nationally, our Golfweek’s Best Modern and Classic Courses lists represent just over one percent of all golf course properties, making a Golfweek’s Best designation a highly coveted award that benefits the fortunate few.”

The two top spots on the Classic list are repeats for the third year in a row, with the Alister MacKenzie-designed Cypress Point Club in Pebble Beach, Calif., keeping the No. 1 spot and the George Crump and Harry S. Colt-designed Pine Valley Golf Club in Pine Valley, N.J., ranking second. Rounding out the top five on the Classic list, in order: No. 3 Shinnecock Hills Golf Club (Southampton, N.Y.); Pebble Beach National Golf Links (Pebble Beach, Calif.); and Merion Golf Club (East), in Ardmore, Penn.

The top course on the Golfweek’s Best Modern Courses list remains Sand Hills Golf Club in Mullen, Neb., designed by the team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. It is followed by the Tom Doak-designed Pacific Dunes in Bandon, Ore.; Whistling Straits (Straits) in Mosel, Wis.; Friar’s Head (Baiting Hollow, N.Y.); and Pete Dye Golf Club (Bridgeport, W. Va.).

The Modern list features only six newcomers this year, the smallest rookie class in the ranking’s 12-year history.

Golfweek’s course raters, a nationwide team of more than 450 evaluators, have scoured the landscape, surveyed over 500 Classic and 1,200 Modern nominated courses, and rendered their judgment on the basis of 10 standards of evaluation. Collectively, they have turned in more than 37,000 votes.

The criteria for evaluating the golf courses, and Golfweek’s Best Classic, Modern, and a comprehensive state-by-state list, may be found at http://www.Golfweek.com.
