CAPE GIRARDEAU, MISSOURI – The Dalhousie Junior Championship was honored by the American Junior Golf Association Friday, Feb. 29, at its Annual Meeting with the 2007 “Tournament of the Year” award. The “Tournament of the Year” award is given annually to the tournament that goes ‘above and beyond’ in terms of charitable contribution, community support, media relations and the overall execution of a championship that makes it truly special for the players, families and AJGA staff in attendance.
Each year during the Annual Meeting’s “Digger Smith Awards Banquet” – named after AJGA Chairman of the Board, Jordan R. “Digger” Smith – the AJGA presents awards to the tournaments with the best media coverage, junior-am fundraising tournament, volunteer support base and hospitality. The Association also recognizes its golf professional of the year, new tournament of the year, and overall tournament of the year.
The Tournament Co-Chairmen for the Dalhousie Junior Championship included Cape Girardeau Mayor Jay Knudtson and Dalhousie Founder/Managing Member, Cord Dombrowski. The event raised $12,000 for participating members of the Southeast Missouri High School Golf Association, raised $12,000 for the AJGA Foundation’s Ace Grant, attracted over 175 volunteers, and had the fourth largest Junior-Am in the country thanks in part to major support from Pepsi – Mid America, Montgomery Bank and the Cape Girardeau Convention & Visitors Bureau.
“This award is a tribute to our wonderful community,” said Dalhousie General Manager, Andy Deiro. “The golf course is truly fantastic, but just as important is the enthusiasm of the volunteers and spectators, our Midwest hospitality, the generosity of our sponsors and participants and the tremendous media coverage.”
“On behalf of all of the members and staff at Dalhousie Golf Club, we were all honored to be recognized as the AJGA’s Tournament of the Year,” stated Dalhousie owner and tournament co-chairman Cord Dombrowski. “This esteemed award is truly a testament to everyone’s efforts to make the AJGA Dalhousie Junior Championship a memorable and prestigious event for all involved. We look forward to the upcoming 2008 Dalhousie Junior Championship as well preparing to host the AJGA’s Rolex Tournament of Champions in 2009.”
Players and their families were treated to two great evenings: the highly unique Lambert’s BBQ “Throwed Roll” competition and the Optimist Clubs of Southeast Missouri-Sponsored Fish Fry at Dalhousie at Water’s Edge. Highlights included Hillbilly golf, a fun-filled fishing derby and X Box Guitar Hero.
“I am extremely proud of the job that Andy, Cord and the entire team at Dalhousie did in the execution of such a phenomenal event,” stated OB Sports principal and current AJGA board member, C.A. Roberts. “We knew the quality of the golf course would speak for itself as a world class venue. However, the creativity of the staff and the tournament committee exceeded all of our expectations,” added Roberts.
