First Win for New TaylorMade Tour Burner Driver, which is also the No. 1 Driver Model at the Event; Fellow TMaG Tour Staff Pro Peter Lonard, also playing Tour Burner Driver, is Runner-up by a Shot
CARLSBAD, Calif. (March 31, 2008) – TaylorMade-adidas Golf Tour Staff professional Andres Romero used the new TaylorMade® Tour Burner® driver to edge fellow TMaG staffer Peter Lonard by one stroke at the Zurich Classic to earn his first victory on the PGA Tour.
Romero, who has used the Tour Burner driver since his 2008 PGA Tour debut at the FBR Open, shot a 68 in the final round after a 65 in Saturday’s third round en route to a 13-under 275 total. The Argentinean striped his drives an average of 291.0 yards in the final round and hit 83% of greens in regulation during his four-under final round and then waited two-and-a-half hours for the rest of the field to finish.
"I played great these two rounds, especially with my tee shots," Romero said. "These two rounds I hit plenty of fairways. I think I missed two or three in these two rounds, and that was very important."
The win was the first for the new Tour Burner driver, which is scheduled to launch at retail at the end of April. The Tour Burner was also the number one driver model played at the Zurich Classic with 14 in play.* Engineered for all types of players seeking tour-caliber distance, the TaylorMade Tour Burner driver features Dual Crown technology to create an exceptionally low center of gravity that makes it easier to create vertical-gear effect at impact, which achieves the high launch angle / low spin-rate combination that promotes greater distance. Lonard, who also played the Tour Burner driver, and Romero were among dozens of competitors forced by poor weather Saturday to finish the third round on Sunday morning. They started the final round tied, a shot out of the lead, with Romero bettering Lonard in the afternoon by one to take the title. Lonard used the Tour Burner to go for the green of the par-four 16th both times he played the hole on Sunday. On his first try the ball finished in the heart of the putting surface and he two-putted for birdie. On his second try the ball landed softly short of the green and finished on the front fringe. Again he two-putted for birdie.
Lonard also played the new Rossa® Monza® Spider putter, and turned in another week of solid putting by ranking T13 in putts per round and 9th in putts per GIR. His putting statistics have improved dramatically in recent weeks.
Lonard and Romero also both wore adidas Golf’s new TOUR 360 LTD footwear and ClimaCool® apparel. The TOUR360 LTD features adidas Golf’s new THiN-Tech technology, which positions the player closer to the ground to promote improved footwork.
TaylorMade drivers continued to be the most-played driver brand at the Zurich Classic with 44% of the field. In addition, TaylorMade irons were the most-used brand for the 13th time in 15 events in 2008, and TaylorMade won the count in fairway woods, hybrids and total metalwoods.***
