WALLACE, N.C. – River Landing’s two award-winning courses and practice facility will host several major golfing events during the next three months, including U.S. Open local qualifying for the seventh time in the last eight years.
River Landing will begin a series of tournaments by hosting the UNC-W Lady Seahawk Invitational for the eighth straight year April 7-8.
The following week, the River Landing Intercollegiate, hosted by North Carolina State, will take place April 11-13. This event features top 25 teams Florida State, Duke and Wake Forest in the 15-team field, while four of the nation’s top 20 college players — Jonas Blixt (Florida State), Webb Simpson (Wake Forest), Matt Hill (N.C. State) and Kevin O’Connell (North Carolina) – are scheduled to participate.
“These tournaments are a way for River Landing to give back to the community of Wallace and to support college golf,” said River Landing head pro Larry George.
The women will play on the Landing Course, while the college men will tee it up on the River Course.
River Landing is one of just three private golf clubs to have two courses ranked in the top 50 in the state by the North Carolina Golf Panel, which voted the River Course and Landing Course as the two best in Eastern North Carolina.
The N.C. Golf Panel has also ranked River Landing’s practice facility as the best in Eastern North Carolina, along with having the two best par-4s – No. 18 on the River Course and No. 9 on the Landing Course.
On May 9, River Landing will host U.S. Open local qualifying, which is the first stage en route to the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego.
“We’ve obviously a golf course that’s going to be in great condition and the Carolinas Golf Association officials don’t have to question that year-to-year,” George said when asked about River Landing hosting Open qualifying for the eighth time. “For me, it gets you excited and ramped up. The River Landing members and local golf fans from Raleigh to Wilmington love to sit around all day and watch some of these great golfers. It truly is a fun day of golf.”
The month of June will also be busy for River Landing, which will host Carolinas Amateur qualifying June 18, then U.S. Amateur Public Links local qualifying June 23-24. The U.S. Amateur Public Links championship is scheduled for mid-July at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora, Colo.
All events are open to the public free of charge.
River Landing, a 1,400-acre private golfing community, is located off Interstate 40 at Exit 385, about 35 miles north of Wilmington.
