Gaylord, MI (April 7, 2008) – For the eighth consecutive time, Treetops Resort in northern Michigan was named a Silver Medal Resort byGOLF Magazine, one of America’s most popular golf publications. The coveted biennial award recognizing America’s premier golf destinations is in the magazine’s April 2008 issue.
"Maintaining our status as a Silver Medal Resort with GOLF Magazine continues to solidify Treetops’ position as one of the top golf resort destinations in the country," said Rick Smith, the resort’s owner and managing partner and the architect who created three of the resort’s five courses. "The quality and variety of golf at Treetops is quite possibly the best collection of golf found anywhere and to be recognized along side some of golf’s finest destinations is a true honor."
GOLF Magazine compiled its list of top resort destinations by calling on more than 8,000 readers to vote at Golf.com to determine the winners. GOLF Magazine’s Premier Resorts were determined by four criteria; golf, lodging, food and drink, and service. GOLF apportioned 40% of the total to the golf product and 20% to each of the other categories.
Treetops Resort, located in the heart of America’s Summer Golf Mecca, Gaylord Michigan, is home to 81 holes of championship golf, which weighed heavily in the resort making GOLF’s elite list. The quality and variety of golf at Treetops, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., Tom Fazio, and Smith, is certainly as good as any collection of courses in the country.
Robert Trent Jones Sr. started it all at Treetops in 1987 where he created one of the most scenic courses in America. Jones spent a great deal of time on the site, one of his last designs. He coined the name "Treetops" as he looked out over the deep drop to the green of the popular par 3 6th hole that offers spectacular views that stretch over 30-40 miles of northern Michigan. Tom Fazio followed Jones and his Premier course remains the only Tom Fazio design in Michigan. Fazio designed a wonderful player-friendly course that sweeps in and out of valleys and along ridges with beautiful elevation changes throughout.
Smith designed three of the resorts championship courses. His Signature course brings together a wonderful combination of northern Michigan hardwoods and elevation changes. The design incorporates features similar to courses in Ireland with fescue covered bunkers, undulating green complexes, and firm conditions allowing various run up shots. The Tradition course provides an open links style feel with wider fescue lined fairways, subtle green complexes, and strategic bunkering. The Tradition is perfect for resort guests, families, kids, or golfers who prefer walking.
Smith also designed the popular Par 3 course – Threetops, made famous across the country as the site of the ESPN Par 3 Shootout televised from 1998-2006. Threetops became the national symbol of the resort as the ESPN production showed off the natural beauty of the resort and redefined the wide attractiveness of nine-hole Par 3 golf. Smith’s simple design strategy utilizing ridges and elevation changes created the best par 3 course in America according to some leading golf publications.
In addition to the 81 holes of championship golf, Treetops, is a full-service, multi-season resort destination that offers 23 downhill ski runs, tubing and two terrain-parks.
Lodging at Treetops consists of 238 guest rooms including standard and deluxe rooms, suites and hospitality rooms and two and three bedroom condominiums. A 10,000 square-foot convention center is available for conferences along with a variety of other meeting facilities. Rounding out the amenities are three restaurants, the Treetops Spa, an award-winning child development center, retail shops offering a variety of clothing and equipment, indoor and outdoor heated pools and much more.
