CHAMPIONSGATE, Fla.-David Leadbetter and the entire David Leadbetter Golf Academy family congratulate Trevor Immelman on his championship victory at the 2008 Masters Tournament.
“I’m absolutely thrilled for Trevor!” say David Leadbetter, coach to Trevor Immelman. “This victory validates all the hard work on his game that we’ve put in over the last few years.” Leadbetter, who grew up in Immelman’s native South Africa, began working with Immelman in February of 2005.
Immelman showed the poise and conviction of a true champion as he held off Tiger Woods and Brandt Snedeker en route to his first major championship win. Immelman, 28 years old, becomes the first player since 1980 (Seve Ballesteros) to lead or share the lead in every round thanks largely in part to his great ball striking, leading the field in fairways hit and ranking 2nd in greens in regulation and 3rd in total putts. With many seemingly easy opportunities to falter and drop strokes over the final 9 holes on Sunday, the then 29th (currently 15th) ranked player in the world converted several late missed greens to close the door on his victory.
Following a scare earlier in the year when doctors discovered a benign tumor on his diaphragm, Immelman struggled to return to his impressive 2006 PGA Tour Rookie of The Year form, in which he won the BMW Championship. Slowly, with time spent with Leadbetter at his World Headquarters in ChampionsGate, FL, Immelman began to take steps in the right direction towards his winning ways. "I started chipping away at a few things, and I was missing cuts but just trying to stay positive because I knew I was improving week after week.” said Immelman. “Here I am after missing the cut last week, Masters Champion. It’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard of. "
Leadbetter went on to say, “His performance on one of the most difficult stages in golf was a true joy to watch. Trevor’s swing stood up to the rigors and pressure of some of the most trying conditions we’ve seen in years at Augusta National. I could not be happier for Trevor and his family- he is such a tremendous talent, and I truly believe that this is just a sign of things to come.”
