BLUE BELL, Pa. (April 21, 2008) – Meadowlands Country Club, the 57-year-old William and David Gordon-designed course, was recently highlighted in a feature story on renovations in the April issue of GolfStyles Philadelphia magazine.
While a number of private clubs in the Philadelphia area have closed for varying periods of time in order to facilitate a major renovation, Meadowlands was singled out as a shining example of a club that achieved a major renovation without ever closing the club to member play. The effort took the better part of 10 years to accomplish and the final touches are being put on three greens this year. The finished product will be displayed in the fall.
“Our theme all along has been Brains over Brawn,” said Gil Benjamin, secretary of Meadowlands CC. “We never wanted to interrupt member play. Occasionally, over the last 10 years, the members had to play around areas of construction but at least they were always able to play eighteen continuous holes.”
Len Ehrlich, the Meadowlands green chairman who has overseen the final stages of the renovation and worked closely with architect Rick Jacobsen, admitted, “This may not be the easiest or the fastest way to bring about a renovation of the course, but it was the best way for Meadowlands. The end result is a course that has all of the modern advancements necessary to compete in today’s difficult market.”
Meadowlands CC is a private country club on the outskirts of Philadelphia, in the golf-rich Montgomery County. It is situated on 128 acres, amidst some of the prime real estate available in Pennsylvania. The club has resisted overtures from developers and underscored its commitment to creating the finest family-friendly country club with the extensive renovation of the golf course as well as the magnificent Georgian-style clubhouse.
