After several years of work, the major components of California’s golf industry have come together to form a non-profit entity, the California Alliance for Golf, to represent the positive interests of golf in the state. Numerous high-profile organizations, such as the Northern California Golf Association, the Southern California Golf Association, the Northern California PGA of America, the Southern California PGA of America, the California Club Manager’s Association, the California Golf Course Superintendents’ Association and American Golf Corporation, were brought together to form this alliance. The initial founders represent more than 300,000 individual golfers and more than 900 golf courses throughout the state.
The mission of the Alliance is multi-faceted:
* To improve business conditions for the golf industry within the state
* Serve as an educational resource for the industry and the general public
* Function as an advocate for the industry before the state’s legislative bodies and governmental entities as well as special districts
* Develop a communication system for the public to understand the economic benefits the golf industry produces for the state
* Provide a proactive educational and cooperative partnership with California regarding the environmental stewardship golf provides
The California Alliance for Golf will represent hundreds of thousands of youth, adults and seniors, all of whom can enjoy the lifelong sport of golf. Constituents include superintendents, golf course owners and managers, women golfers, professionals, private and public courses, public links players, various suppliers to the golf industry and other groups and industries enhanced by the golf industry. These include tourism, real estate developments and ecological preserves to name a few. In short, the California Alliance for Golf will be an all-inclusive representative of the entire golf industry.
Underway is an important study by an independent organization analyzing the economic impact of golf in California. Methodologies being used will allow meaningful comparison with other states and industries. The report will be published and distributed this June as the US Open is being played at Torrey Pines in San Diego. The Alliance appreciates the opportunity to introduce itself to California and its citizens.
