Expanded field of men, women, seniors eye June 6-8 challenge

WINTERGREEN, Va. – Championship competition returns this spring to Wintergreen Resort, which hosts the second Wintergreen National Amateur Championship sponsored by Club Car, a premier event designed for elite men and women amateur golfers in the United States.

Scheduled for June 6-8, 2008, the event is an individual 54-hole stroke-play tournament to be played at the resort’s two award-winning golf courses – Devils Knob and Stoney Creek (Shamokin/Tuckahoe nines). Wintergreen has a rich tournament history that includes hosting the Virginia State Amateur, the Virginia State Mid-Am and Virginia State Junior, as well as a Canadian Tour event.

Last year, Nathan Schenz-Davis of San Diego, a member of the Liberty University (Lynchburg, Va.) golf team, posted a wire-to-wire victory against a solid field of collegians and amateurs with a 3-over-par total of 219. This spring, Schenz-Davis was named to the Big South all-conference team.

The 2008 Wintergreen National Amateur field has been expanded to a maximum of 280 players, featuring three divisions: men (USGA handicap index of 5.0 or less), women (USGA handicap index of 10.0 or less) and senior (USGA handicap index of 10.0 or less). The name of the overall winner is to be engraved on the championship’s perpetual trophy, with individual trophies to be awarded to the top three finishers in each division.

The tournament competitor’s package includes an official Wintergreen National Amateur golf shirt, hat and towel, plus one dozen Callaway golf balls. Practice rounds are available June 4-5 ($35 per round), with competition scheduled for June 6-8, 18 holes each day. The first round is to be played at Devils Knob, with the final two rounds at Stoney Creek. Caddies are available upon request.

Callaway Golf will host a Demo Day on June 5, which is to be followed by the official competitor reception dinner, featuring a special guest speaker at the Wintergreen Resort Conference Center.

The entry fee is $125, with a registration deadline of 5 p.m. (Eastern) on Tuesday, May 27, 2008.

Stoney Creek Golf Course is the resort’s 27-hole valley layout designed by renowned golf course architect Rees Jones. Flowing through the historic Rockfish Valley, it incorporates natural springs and native habitat, including Lake Monocan and Stoney Creek, with all three nines presenting elevation changes and large, deceptively contoured greens. Tournament play is to be on the Monocan and Shamokin nines for a par 72 that will play to 7,005 yards.

Devils Knob Golf Course is a co-design by the father-son team of Ellis and Dan Maples. The highest course in Virginia, Devils Knob is an exquisite mountaintop layout at 3,850 feet elevation known for cool summer temperatures and outstanding tee-to-green conditions. The par 70 is only 6,700 yards from the back tees, but it is not a pushover with a slope rating of 138.

One of the Mid-Atlantic’s premier year-round golf destinations, Wintergreen Resort is located in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, where year-round golf is offered – even during ski season – and soothing luxury is readily available at the Wintergarden Spa.

Wintergreen Resort is offering tournament participants and their families accommodations (studios to seven bedroom homes) at preferred rates. To reserve a room at these special rates, please call (800) 266-2444 and specify participation in the tournament.
