PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla., May 8, 2008 – Two-time LPGA major winner Sherri Steinhauer has been named the Honorary Chair of the ‘Women Who Lead’ Awards program of the Executive Women’s Golf Association (EWGA). She will play a round of golf with three of the award winners at the February 2009 EWGA Conference in Palm Springs, Calif.
Introduced this year, the ‘Women Who Lead’ Awards are designed to recognize outstanding performance and outstanding results among EWGA chapter volunteer leaders in 10 distinct categories. Each of the EWGA 12 geographic sections will select a winner for each category and then out of the section-level winners, 10 overall association-level winners will be chosen. The top winners will earn a monetary award for their chapter, extensive recognition and be entered in a drawing to win one of the three playing spots with Sherri Steinhauer at the EWGA Conference.
“Sherri is such a great role model. She knows how to continue to challenge herself to take the lead and be a winner. She is a veteran LPGA Tour player who keeps winning – three British Opens, majors in two different decades and four U.S. Solheim Cup teams,” says Pam Swensen, chief executive officer of the EWGA. “Our ‘Women Who Lead’ Awards are all about recognizing women who challenge themselves to be the best volunteers in ten key categories. Sherri is certainly an ideal example of a woman putting forth outstanding performance and achieving outstanding results.”
Steinhauer won her eighth LPGA title at the 2007 LPGA State Farm Classic and in 2006 won her second career major at the Weetabix Women’s British Open. From Madison, Wis., she played collegiate golf at the University of Texas in Austin where she claimed five victories and All-America honors in 1985. Joining the LPGA Tour in 1986, Steinhauer became one of eight Rolex First Time Winners winning the 1992 du Maurier Classic, one of the LPGA’s four major championships at the time. She has been on four U.S. Solheim Cup teams and is a member of the 2008 LPGA Player Executive Committee.
“The EWGA is a vital link to bringing more women into the game of golf,” says Steinhauer. “I am pleased to be involved with the EWGA’s ‘Women Who Lead’ Awards program to recognize outstanding volunteer service. It is these volunteer leaders who make the EWGA experience so rewarding and keep more women in the game.”
Since its founding in 1991, the EWGA has touched the lives of more than 85,000 women by providing opportunities to learn, play, and enjoy the game of golf for business and for life. This not-for-profit association delivers a wide range of golf, social and networking activities for both new and experienced golfers at over 120 local chapters throughout the United States and international chapters in Canada and France. The EWGA is headquartered in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. For more information about the association and its membership, visit www.ewga.com
