The 24th May 2008 marks a huge milestone in the history of St Andrews as it was on this day in 1908 that old Tom Morris passed away. The Captain, Mr Charles Huldal, and Committee of the New Golf Club of St Andrews feel that the most suitable way to honour the first Honorary Member of the Club is to play golf and celebrate with dinner.
The Old Tom Morris Memorial Golf Tournament will be played over the New Course on Wednesday 21 May. The field will include not only local St Andrews clubs but also players from Prestwick and Prestwick St Nicolas Golf Clubs as Old Tom spent a number of years with both these Clubs before returning to St Andrews. A prize giving will follow in the New Golf Club and will include a toast to Old Tom in his favourite tipple “Black Strap”.
The second part of the celebration will be a dinner at the New Golf Club on Saturday 24 May. The evening promises to be a very special occasion during which David Joy, aka Old Tom Morris, will make an appearance. After dinner there will be an illustrated presentation by Dr David Malcolm co author of a book called Tom Morris of St Andrews, the Colossus of Golf.
Both these events are being held in support of the Keepers of the Green, a charity based in St Andrews that provides powered mobility to the needy, as well as promoting the ethos and traditions of the game of golf as they were in the time of Tom Morris.
