Nickent Golf is getting used to “big weekends” this spring. For the third time in 4 weeks, a Nickent staff player has won on the Nationwide Tour.
Jeff Klauk picked up his second career Nationwide Tour win at the Melwood Prince George’s County Open on Sunday, earning $117,000. He moved to second place on the Nationwide Tour money list after collecting 7 Top 25 finishes in 11 events.
“I think I’m a different player than I was last year,” said Klauk. “Out here, it’s all about improving. If you keep improving, that’s all you can do.”
It gets even better for Nickent. Nickent staff player David Mathis, last week’s winner at the BMW Charity Pro Am, finished second this week with his 4DX Evolver driver and woods. He is now the # 1 player on the Nationwide Tour money list with $223,679 earned in 2008. Nickent also has staff players Bryan DeCorso and Ewan Porter at #6 and #7 on the money list. They are all virtually guaranteed a spot on the PGA TOUR in 2009.
For Nickent, the play of their staff players has given them some nice bullet points on their product.
#1 winning hybrid on the 2008 Nationwide Tour (5 wins)
#2 winning driver on the 2008 Nationwide Tour (3 wins)
“We have a lot of love for the Nationwide Tour,” said Nickent Director of Product Marketing Jon Claffey. “We came out here in 2004 looking for a home and we found it. Now we are thriving out here. We have over 25 players on contract, we have our own tour van to work with the players every week and we have Nickent guys all over the TOP 25. It was always our plan to be in this position and we are grateful for all the success our players are experiencing.”
“We looked at the Nationwide as a way to gain credibility on tour and to grow with players to the next level,” said Claffey. “One of our players who started with Nickent on the Nationwide Tour is our star PGA TOUR Jeff Quinney, another big part of our success this weekend.”
Quinney finished 7th at the, moving him from 18th to 12th in the official FedEx Cup Standings. He has now finished in the Top 10 three times and the Top 25 eight times in the 15 events he has played in this year. He has already surpassed his earnings from the 2007 season with $1.8 million earned, and he sits 11th on the Ryder Cup standings.
Just the week before, Quinney finished T3 at the Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass, the course where Jeff Klauk grew up. His father, Fred, recently retired after 23 years as greens superintendent at TPC Sawgrass, a job that provided Jeff an opportunity to soak up invaluable knowledge by observing PGA TOUR players.
“They didn’t realize how closely we watched them when we were growing up,” said Klauk.”I stored so much information away.”
Now it looks as though Jeff and his Nickent friends will join Quinney to get their own taste of the PGA TOUR. And for all the up and coming golfers watching them practice, Nickent Golf is looking for you to fill their shoes on the Nationwide Tour.
