Cromwell, Conn.: For every professional golfer, the first PGA Tour win is exciting. But Hunter Mahan’s first Tour win last year at The Travelers Championship was as exciting for the fans as it was for the players; what happened on the 72nd hole, made the event forever memorable.
Mahan nailed a 144-yd shot to seven feet and drained the putt to force a playoff with Jay Williamson. When they played the 18th again at the TPC River Highlands in sudden death, Williamson struck a beautiful shot to 12 feet. From the middle of the fairway, Mahan then hit the shot of his life – a 134-yard wedge to two feet. After Williamson missed his birdie attempt (barely), Mahan tapped it in for his first win.
“I consider my Sundog HDRIVE glasses a very important part of my equipment,” said Mahan, who turned 27 last month. “Many golfers put their sunglasses on their hat when they putt – but I work directly with Sundog to ensure my HDRIVEs feature lenses that help me with every shot.”
“I think we here at Sundog Eyewear were more excited than Hunter,” recalled John Whitney, Vice President of Product Development. “It was such a dramatic win, and it meant so much to Hunter, that we decided to commemorate that unforgettable victory – and wish him luck in defending his title this week – with a special pair of glasses. And because the fans got such enjoyment out of Hunter’s heroics last year, we want them to share in the celebration this year, too.”
For the occasion, Sundog Eyewear has created a Special Edition HDRIVE III model of Mahan’s popular HD III sunglasses. “The Special Edition sunglasses feature Hunter’s favorite lens color, developed specially for him – the Genuine Performance Series Amber with a Sundog Flash lens coating that provides optimal contrast definition while maximizing visibility,” explained Whitney. “While visiting Hunter earlier this year in California, we learned that matte black is one of his favorite finishes, so we developed this glass to his specification with a custom gold temple graphic and commemorative inner temple description of Hunter’s breakthrough 2007 Travelers Championship win”.
Last year Hunter was wearing his Sundog HDRIVE II glasses when he sunk that winning putt. This week he’ll be wearing his commemorative Special Edition HDRIVE IIIs. At ballot boxes in the Merchandise Tent and the Pro Shop at the TPC River Highlands, fans can enter to win their own pair of Special Edition HD IIIs.
HDRIVE III for 2008 is Hunter Mahan’s third generation style by Sundog Eyewear. The glasses feature De-centered Polycarbonate 8 Base Lens, MaxFlex RILSAN frames, Megol Temple Tips, and Nose Pads with Open Bottom Frame Design.
Hunter’s HDRIVE IIIs are just part of the Sundog Eyewear line that includes the Paula Creamer Collection and Mike Weir’s Weir Golf Signature Series.
