Far Hills, N.J. – Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y., has been selected by the United States Golf Association to host the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open Championship. The dates of the championship are June 27-30.
It will be the first national championship conducted at Sebonack Golf Club, which was designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak and opened in 2006. Several of the course’s holes offer panoramic views of Long Island’s Great Peconic Bay and Cold Spring Pond, while others are played along inland forest. The course also features rolling fairways, expansive bunkers and waste dunes and undulating greens that present challenging swales and burrows.
The course’s seaside land was originally used as a summer home for New York bank tycoon Charles Hamilton Sabin, who in 1919 built a 28,000-square-foot home on the property. In the late 1940s, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers bought the property, which they used as a retreat and later as a summer camp for children. In 2001, Sebonack’s owner, Michael Pascucci, bought the property with the intention of building a championship-level golf course.
“We are delighted to have been selected to host the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open,” said Pascucci. “We believe the combination of the natural beauty and challenge of Sebonack, together with the world’s greatest female golfers, will make for a lot of excitement in an area rich with a history of championship golf. We are very proud to host this national championship.”
It will be the first U.S. Women’s Open held on Long Island and the first time the championship will be conducted in the state of New York since 1973. Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck hosted the 1957 and 1972 U.S. Women’s Opens and The Country Club of Rochester hosted the 1953 and 1973 championships.
Later that summer, from Sept. 7-8, the 2012 Walker Cup Match will be conducted at nearby National Golf Links of America in Southampton.
“I am elated that our efforts to bring prestigious, world-class golf events to Suffolk County have culminated in the decision to play the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open at Sebonack,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy. “This championship and the Walker Cup are both exciting opportunities to showcase the beautiful East End – and two magnificent golf courses – to the world.”
“I am thrilled to hear the news,” said Southampton Town Supervisor Linda Kabot. “The Women’s Open has never been held on Long Island, and with the 2013 Walker Cup at National Golf Links of America, Southampton is truly honored to be the host community for two events of such international acclaim. It will be a boon to our local economy and provide perfect settings to showcase the talents of the world’s most prominent athletes.”
