Far Hills, N.J. – Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y., has been selected by the United States Golf Association to host the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open Championship. The dates of the championship are June 27-30.
It will be the first national championship conducted at Sebonack Golf Club, which was designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak and opened in 2006. Several of the course’s holes offer panoramic views of Long Island’s Great Peconic Bay and Cold Spring Pond, while others are played along inland forest. The course also features rolling fairways, expansive bunkers and waste dunes and undulating greens that present challenging swales and burrows.
The course’s seaside land was originally used as a summer home for New York bank tycoon Charles Hamilton Sabin, who in 1919 built a 28,000-square-foot home on the property. In the late 1940s, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers bought the property, which they used as a retreat and later as a summer camp for children. In 2001, Sebonack’s owner, Michael Pascucci, bought the property with the intention of building a championship-level golf course.

It will be the first U.S. Women’s Open held on Long Island and the first time the championship will be conducted in the state of New York since 1973. Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck hosted the 1957 and 1972 U.S. Women’s Opens and The Country Club of Rochester hosted the 1953 and 1973 championships.
Later that summer, from Sept. 7-8, the 2012 Walker Cup Match will be conducted at nearby National Golf Links of America in Southampton.

The USGA is the national governing body of golf in this country and Mexico, a combined territory that includes more than half the world’s golfers and golf courses.
The Association’s most visible role is played out each season in conducting 13 national championships, including the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Senior Open. Ten additional USGA national championships are exclusively for amateurs, and include the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Women’s Amateur.
The USGA also writes the Rules of Golf, conducts equipment testing, provides expert course maintenance consultations, funds research for better turf and a better environment, maintains a Handicap System and administers an ongoing “For the Good of the Game” grants program, which has allocated more than $59 million over 11 years to successful programs that bring the game’s values to youths from disadvantaged backgrounds and people with disabilities.
